.DISCUSSION...
Through Saturday night...
Today we will start to see the upper level ridge flatten out as a
Pacific trough moves into the region. This will bring downsloped
flow and near record high temperatures for some locations.
Temperatures will be in the mid 70s to low 80s. Minimum relative
humidity values will be similar to Thursday or slightly higher in
the teens and low 20s across much of the region as a cold front
moves through. This could be especially true for the northwest
forecast area as the front may move through before peak daytime
heating. Fire concerns are minimal at this time due to light
winds.
The cold front Friday night into Saturday morning will bring
precipitation chances mostly to locations north and west of
Billings. This initial round will give these areas a 30-60%
chance for greater than 0.1 inches of precipitation. A second
round of precipitation moving through during the day Saturday will
bring a 60-90% chance for greater than 0.1 inches of
precipitation. Saturday afternoon will also bring the chance for
severe thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center currently has a
level 1 of 5 for severe storms along the MT/WY border with the
main threat being strong winds near 60 mph and small hail. A
third round of precipitation moving through Sunday is much more
uncertain at this time with some deterministic models (GFS)
showing the low pressure system taking a more southerly track
bringing more precipitation and other models (ECMWF) showing a
more northerly track and lower precipitation. The chance for 0.1
inches of precipitation Sunday will remain low at less than 30%
across the region with the highest values near Baker.
The main impact from the Sunday system will be strong winds as a
frontal passage brings strong pressure rises, pressure gradient,
and 30-40 kt 850 mb winds. ECMWF EFI tables are showing values of
0.7-0.8 indicating abnormally high winds. NBM is currently giving
almost the entire forecast area a greater than 50% chance of
getting a wind gust over 40 mph. Torgerson
Monday through Friday...
A benign weather pattern sets up for much of the work week. Mostly
upper ridging takes place, with a small chance for a very weak
shortwave to occur sometime during the mid weak, which provides a
small chance for rain showers. Temperatures will be in the upper
60s to low 70s most days, with winds fairly light. Overall, should
be a nice, dry, spring week. Vertz

.AVIATION...
VFR conditions will prevail through this afternoon. A weak frontal
passage will occur this evening, shifting winds and bringing about
a small chance for rain showers at all terminals. Vertz
