Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT
404 AM MDT Mon May 19 2025

.SYNOPSIS...A Pacific storm system will exit the area today,
allowing for a drier and warmer pattern to develop for the
remainder of the week.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z/6AM Wednesday)...The last trailing wave
from the storm system that has been impacting the area is sliding
south across Utah and southwest Wyoming this morning, weakening as
it does so. Seeing just a few showers in association with this
wave, primarily focused over southern Utah. Seeing some snow on
webcams near Bryce Canyon, but little in the way of accumulation.
A low chance of showers will persist, primarily over the higher
terrain, during the morning hours, tapering off during the
afternoon as the wave exits. In the wake of the trough,
temperatures will remain very much on the cool side today across
the area with maxes averaging 15F below seasonal normals.
Additionally, this airmass will bring some hard freeze conditions
to some Utah valleys, including the Uinta Basin, Cache Valley, and
portions of west central and southwest Utah. Going Freeze Warning
covers this threat well.

Behind the exiting trough, a drier and more stable west to
northwest flow will start to advect a warmer airmass into the
area. By Tuesday, maxes will be noticeably less cold, running near
to 5F below normal for this time of year. Some shortwave energy
grazing northern Utah will provide the fuel for a few storms near
the Utah/Idaho border, with gusty winds possible with any storms
that develop.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z/6AM Wednesday)...No notable or impactful weather
expected through the extended forecast. Temperatures will
continue a warming trend Wendesday into Thursday where they will
settle on slightly above average values through the weekend and
into Monday. Ensemble confidence is increasing that the magnitude
of the warm up being driven by a Desert Southwest high ridge will
be moderated by an active northern stream jet moving through the
Pacific Northwest into Montana. This will keep the ridge
suppressed and allow for weak, mainly dry cool fronts at times to
sneak into northern Utah, which will help pump the breaks on a
more robust warm up. With these brush by systems to our north,
cannot rule out an isolated shower late Thursday, and again
Saturday and Sunday afternoons, especially over the northern Utah
mountains. Other than that, confidence is high in a stretch of dry
weather conditions persisting at least into early next week.

&&

.AVIATION...KSLC...There is low (20-30%) chance of some isolated to
widely scattered lake induced rain showers moving through the
terminal through mid morning producing MVFR conditions, which could
also make wind direction erratic, although the magnitude would stay
generally light. Otherwise, VFR conditions will dominate under
clearing skies later today with northerly winds remaining in place
through the day. The more typical southerly winds overnight will
resume tonight.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Prevailing northerly
winds are expected to dominate through much of the day with overall
VFR conditions prevailing. Isolated showers, mainly over the higher
terrain could result in localized MVFR conditions and mountain
obscurations.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...The back edge of a Pacific trough will move across
the area this morning, bringing a few showers. However, after this
the area will see a steady warming trend through the week as high
pressure moves in. Periodic weak disturbances grazing northern
Utah could bring a few high based showers near the Utah/Idaho
border at times during the week, but otherwise conditions will
stay dry.

.SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
