.KEY MESSAGES...

- A band of light snow may lift across the area late tonight
  into Friday morning. Any accumulation is expected to be a
  tenth of an inch or less.

- Increasing confidence in a fast moving system bringing snow to
  much of the state beginning Friday evening through Saturday
  afternoon. Highest totals are expected along and north of
  Highway 14, where 2-4 inches are possible. Totals drop off
  quickly as you move south.

- Temperatures will remains near to above average for the rest
  of this week before cooling back to below average for next
  week.

HIS AFTERNOON-FRIDAY: Gusty northwest winds will decrease quickly
after sunset. The Wind Advisory looks in good shape to conclude at
6pm tonight. Clouds will gradually build in overnight, keeping us
slightly warmer for lows than we would have otherwise been, 8-18
degrees. Early Friday morning, an area of 700 mb frontogenesis may
trigger some light snow showers along and north of Highway 18.
Confidence in snowfall is low, due to a deep (aprox 10,000 ft)
subcloud dry layer. However, there is enough instability in the mid-
levels where there is saturation in the DGZ to trigger the showers.
Should they be able to overcome the dry air and saturate the column,
very light snow showers could produce a trace to a tenth of an inch
in total. Due to the low confidence, PoPs have been limited to less
than 25%. Highs for Friday should be about average (upper 20s) for
areas along and north of Highway 20, and slightly above average for
areas to the south (low to mid 30s). Areas along the southern
Missouri River counties could see highs in the 40s!

FRIDAY EVENING-SATURDAY: Friday evening we will see a mid-level
vorticity wave exit the Rockies and move along the Wyoming/Montana
border. This wave should take a mostly easterly track, skirting the
border of North and South Dakota. As it approaches, a 700-600 mb
region of frontogenesis will trigger some potentially heavier snow
showers. QPF has trended downward since the past run, likely due to
the fast moving nature of the system. Still, with snow to liquid
ratios of 15-20 to 1, snow totals of a few inches is possible. The
heaviest snow is expected to be just south of the North Dakota
border, where up to 6 inches is possible. The gradient of higher
snow totals falls quickly off as you move south. Areas along and
north of Highway 14 look to see 2-4 inches. South of Highway 14 to I-
90 could see 1-3 inches, and areas south of I-90 could see a trace
to an inch. Winds during this time will be easterly, becoming
northwesterly with gusts increasing to 20-25 mph. Higher gusts are
expected over south central South Dakota, of 25-30 mph. But as these
are removed from the heaviest snow drifting is less of a concern.
However, the light and fluffy nature of this snow will likely lead
to brief reductions in visibility due to blowing and drifting snow.
Impacts to travel are possible. Please ensure you and your vehicle
are prepared for winter hazardous travel, especially for areas to
the north.

Temperatures for Friday night will fall to the teens and low 20s.
Strong CAA behind the wave and surface front mean that our highs for
Saturday will only climb slightly above the lows, in the upper teens
to upper 20s. Lows for Saturday night will be cold, in the single
digits above zero south of I-90, and single digits below zero to the
north. Wind chills by Sunday morning will be in the negative single
digits to negative teens.

SUNDAY-INTO-NEXT WEEK: Sunday looks to be dry and seasonably cool
with highs in the 20s to low 30s. Sunday night will be another cold
one with lows in the single digits above and below zero. Monday
marks the beginning of a more active pattern for next week. A series
of waves will bring multiple chances for light snow. At this time
details are lacking, and so have left the NBM PoPs as they are.

A band of light snow may develop over south central SD toward
06Z tonight, then lift to the north and east across the area
into Friday Morning. Accumulation is expected to be 0.10" or
less. Brief MVFR visibility will be possible with this band.
Winds will become light and variable tonight, then pick up out
of the southeast on Friday afternoon. Light to moderate snow
will push across northern SD on Friday afternoon and evening,
bringing light snow - with MVFR visibility - mainly to areas
north of Interstate 90.
