Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Wilmington NC
248 PM EDT Wed May 21 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
Slightly cooler and less humid air will build into the area
tomorrow. Dry air and slightly below normal temperatures will
persist through the Memorial Day weekend. Unsettled weather may
return late Sunday into next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Cold front entering the area from the west this evening. Wind
will veer and the dewpoint will start dropping. Tomorrow will be
more seasonable/comfortable as high pressure starts building in
from the NW and dewpoints drop down close to 50. After a small
overnight lull overnight tomorrow afternoon will grow breezy as
mixing to some 7 kft.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Cooler and drier air will follow a secondary cold front on
Thursday night. High pressure will build across the region
overnight and into Friday. Westerly winds early in the day will
weaken through the afternoon. As the center of high pressure
settles overhead on Friday and into the holiday weekend,
temperatures will hover at or slightly below normal for late
May. Expect afternoon highs around 80 with overnight lows in the
lower 60s. Dry air peaks on Friday Night as lows drop into the
mid and upper 50s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Flattening mid level flow over the central US early next week
will slowly reintroduce rain into the forecast. A few isolated
storms are possible on Sunday as a marginally more humid surface
layer produces some afternoon instability. Highs rebound a
touch; into the mid 80s.

Coastal trough and warm front to our south approach the area on
Monday as a broad area of low pressure builds across the
southern Plains and southeastern US. Warming temperatures and a
bolstered sea breeze should lead to better rain chances on
Monday and into Monday night. The surface low will work its way
eastward through the early portions of next week, prolonging
rain chances through the end of the period. Confidence is low in
the details due to the weak nature of forcing aloft and the
development of upstream convection, but some form of unsettled
weather should result.

&&

.AVIATION /19Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
VFR with SW winds that will veer to W and then NW this
eve/tonight with a cold frontal passage. Diurnally driven
cumulus clouds this afternoon will tend to stay scattered and
not offer a ceiling.

Extended Outlook...High confidence in VFR Wednesday night
through Sunday.

&&

.MARINE...
Through Thursday... Veering winds slated for this evening as a
cold front pushes through. A few gusts to 25kt are tough to rule
out but an advisory still doesn`t seem needed at this time.
Swell energy is very weak so wind waves will be the dominant
wave through the period, the offshore direction keeping any
advisory-worthy 6 ft seas outside of the 20 nm zones.

Thursday Night through Monday... Winds decrease behind a cold
front on Friday. With high pressure settling overhead of the
weekend, expect light and generally offshore winds. Nearly
perfect boating conditions with seas around 1-2 feet. With cool
temperatures onshore, the sea breeze is unlikely to be strong,
but there could be seas around 2 feet near the coast where winds
are locally enhanced. On Sunday, high pressure moves offshore
and southerly winds develop. Onshore flow increases on Monday as
a coastal trough develops. Showers and storms could develop
along this trough on Monday. Winds S around 10-15 knots Sunday
and Memorial Day.
