Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Charleston SC
Issued by National Weather Service Columbia SC
432 AM EDT Tue May 13 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
A front is pushing east across the region, with high pressure
expected to return late week with rising temperatures.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
The cold front has moved through the area quicker than
anticipated, leading to significantly lower areal coverage of
shower and thunderstorm activity. Highest chances remain across
the tri-county region (30-40%), though even there coverage
remains questionable. Chances for fog have increased given the
abundant moisture across the region, with 30-40% probability
for visibilities below 3 miles for inland southeast South
Carolina and Georgia. Low temperature forecast remains on track
for overnight lows in the mid to upper 60s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/
On Wednesday a closed low in the mid-levels over the Ohio
Valley will continue to slowly lift northeastward, gradually
transitioning into an elongated trough. At the surface a front
will be positioned well off the southeastern coast. While
Wednesday afternoon will see less convective coverage than
earlier this week, at least scattered showers and storms are
possible. High temperatures are forecast to be right around
normal in the low to mid 80s, with overnight lows generally in
the 60s.
The aforementioned trough will shift off the East Coast
Thursday into Friday with ridging developing over the
southeastern states aloft. At the surface high pressure is also
expected to prevail. Dry and quiet weather is expected with
warming temperatures both days. High temperatures on both
Thursday and Friday are forecast to reach into the low 90s. More
notably are the increasing dew points, with low 70s forecast
Friday afternoon. Temperatures combined with high RH values will
likely yield heat index values around 100F Friday afternoon.
&&
.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Weak mid-level ridging will prevail over the southeastern states
through the weekend, with slightly zonal flow developing over
the weekend. Some models indicate a shortwave trough could
ripple across the zonal flow this weekend or early next week.
Rain chances remain low through the period, with only isolated
showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. Temperatures will
remain well above normal, with highs reaching into the low 90s.
Combined with high RH values, heat index values could reach 100F
through the weekend. Lows will similarly remain above normal.
&&
.AVIATION /09Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Conditions vary across the region, with MVFR cigs occurring
along the coast becoming VFR inland. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms are pushing into our southeastern GA counties,
with MVFR/IFR cigs and vsbys as rain is falling, and will be
moving into the low country counties throughout the overnight
hours. Guidance continues to hint that build-down-stratus may
result in patchy fog across SE GA, so have included mention of
IFR vsbys at SAV. Expect conditions to improve slowly
throughout the morning hours, with mostly clear skies into the
afternoon hours. Isolated showers/storms develop during the
afternoon, though given the areal coverage have not included
mention at any of the TAF sites.
Extended Aviation Outlook: Brief flight restrictions are possible in
showers/thunderstorms Tuesday and Wednesday. Otherwise, prevailing
VFR.
&&
.MARINE...
Thunderstorms will remain common across the marine zones
tonight into the overnight period. Early morning surface
observations have shown weaker winds than anticipated, which has
also decreased the wave heights, and are no longer expecting
Small Craft Advisory criteria to be met. All headlines have been
cancelled early.
Wednesday through Sunday: Marine conditions through the period
are expected to remain below Small Craft Advisory criteria, with
south to southwest winds 15 knots or less and seas averaging 2
to 4 ft.
Rip Currents, the combination of onshore flow and 2 to 3 breakers
may produce rip currents along the SC/GA coast today. Breakers
could exceed 3 ft along the Charleston County coast this
afternoon.
