Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Portland OR
215 AM PST Sun Nov 24 2024
.SYNOPSIS...Cool and showery weather continues today into Monday.
But, does appear the culprit low pressure area offshore will drift
southward early this week, with high pressure building across the
Pacific NW. This will bring dry and bit cooler weather for mid-week,
lasting into next weekend.
&&
.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday)...Still have persistent low
pressure offshore, with cool unstable air mass over the region. As
such, will maintain showers today into tonight, along with a
thunderstorm or two along the coast and across the coastal waters.
Snow levels will hold at 3500 to 4000 ft, but with showery nature of
the precipitation, will see another 1 to 4 inches for the Cascades.
No advisories for the Cascades, but travelers should continue to be
ready for slick spots at times.
The low pressure offshore will gradually and slowly drift south to
southeastward tonight into Monday, eventually shifting inland over
northern California on Tuesday. So, will maintain showers through
Monday, with snow levels still at 3500 to 4000 ft. But, as move into
Tuesday does appear the low will be far enough away as it moves into
northern California) that showers will be not be as frequent. So,
will trend to lower chances for showers on Tuesday. /Rockey
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Saturday)...Overall, models continue
to trend towards drier weather as high pressure builds over the
Pacific NW. While a few computer model runs still showing a chance of
showers, due to their keeping ridge weaker. But, feel that the trend
to building ridge will win out. So, will trend under NBM trends, and
keep dry for Wed through Sat. But, will be cooler, primarily at
night. With clear skies, and light offshore flow, good bet will have
freezing temperatures (upper 20s to lower 30s). With all the wet
ground and winds being light, will likely to have to deal with plenty
of overnight/morning fog as well. /Rockey
&&
.AVIATION...Showers continue today as low pressure offshore
spreads moisture into the region. Flight conditions primarily VFR
early this morning, but coastal areas should see more MVFR by 12Z
Sun. Inland areas generally VFR with about a 10-20% chance for
MVFR after 20-22Z Sun. Then as an upper level shortwave trough
swings into the region this evening, MVFR chances increase to
30-70%, then decrease overnight with the departure of the trough.
South to southeast winds are generally fairly weak, but KONP
could see some gusts up to 20-25 kt at times through today.
PDX APPROACHES...Showers and generally VFR today with brief MVFR
later this afternoon and tonight. Winds east to southeast around
10 kt through tonight. /mh
&&
.MARINE...Series of small scale lows traverse south to north over
the waters today and tonight. The first to bring marginal Gales
at times with gusts 25 to 35 kt this morning, with a relative
lull, then another low increase the winds this afternoon. Then
should ease to 20 to 25 kt tonight into Monday.
Given the short duration of these stronger winds, seas are not
expected to have enough time to build much beyond 10 to 13 ft,
with a peak likely Sunday afternoon. Beyond Sunday, benign
conditions are expected to return with winds and seas subsiding
below 20 kt and 10 ft respectfully. /mh
