Area Forecast Discussion...Updated
National Weather Service Portland OR

Updated Aviation...

.SYNOPSIS...A broad low pressure system is shifting east of the
region but is still keeping conditions cool and unsettled,
especially across the Cascades - through early Wednesday. Expect
daytime highs in the 50s along the coast and 60s inland through
at least Thursday. A brief period of warm and dry conditions
are expected Wednesday evening through Thursday morning. Light
precipitation then returns late Thursday and continues through
the weekend.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Thursday Night...Conditions this
afternoon are gradually warming and drying out as a shortwave
ridge builds over the region. A few light showers may still
linger, mostly across the Cascades, but the overall trend is
toward more stable and slightly warmer weather.

By Wednesday, expect milder temperatures - mid 60s inland and
low 50s along the coast, with mainly dry conditions. However,
models suggest the shortwave ridge will start to break down
Wednesday night into Thursday, transitioning to a weak trough
or more zonal flow.

Thursday looks slightly cooler and still mostly dry to start,
but by late in the day, weak disturbances embedded in the flow
could bring another round of light showers, continuing into
early Friday.

.LONG TERM...Friday through Tuesday...From Friday and into early
next week, a stronger low pressure system dropping down from far
western Canada will likely bring another round of light
precipitation. Rain chances return by the end of the week and
linger through the weekend. Temperatures will hold steady,
remaining close to seasonal averages. By early next week,
forecast models suggest that high pressure may begin building
over the eastern Pacific and gradually extend into the western
US, favoring a trend toward drier and more stable weather.
Still, by Tuesday, another system may track southeastward from
British Columbia, bringing the potential for renewed showers.

.AVIATION...Reports from around the region show VFR conditions
inland and a VFR/MVFR mix along the coast as of 04z Wed. Expect
cloud cover to gradually increase in coverage 06-12z as a weak
upper level disturbance approaches in northwest flow aloft. This
will reinforce MVFR conditions at the coastal terminals (80-90%
chance) through 08z, with MVFR conditions eventually spreading
inland to the Willamette Valley terminals 10-12z Wed. Could also
see a few scattered showers develop over the area through around
18z Wed. Conditions improve back to VFR 18-20z Wed and persist
through the end of the period in the wake of the disturbance.

PDX AND APPROACHES...VFR conditions with W-NW winds of 5-7 kt
this evening. Increasing cloud cover will bring MVFR conditions
10-12z Wed, lasting through around 18z. Could also see a few
showers near the terminal during this time. VFR conditions return
after 18z Wed and prevail through the rest of the period. /CB

&&

.MARINE...Surface high pressure centered west of Cape Mendocino
will continue to support increasing northwest flow, with gusts
reaching 20-25 kt over the outer waters and 15-20 kt over the
inner waters throughout the rest of today. Northwest swell at
8-10 ft at 10 seconds today, with winds and swell diminishing
tonight through Wednesday night. The Small Craft Advisory remains
in effect across the outer waters through 5 AM Wednesday, while
the inner waters are expected to see a shorter duration of
hazardous conditions from 11 AM through 11 PM today. Additionally,
a strong ebb after 6 PM this evening amidst the elevated swell
will see locally rougher seas of 9-10 ft within the Columbia River
Bar, yielding marginally hazardous conditions from 3 AM through
11 PM today.

High pressure building toward the coast will see winds and seas
slowly fall through Thursday, before a reinvigorated northwest
swell arrives with a frontal system approaching the coast on
Friday. Southwest flow ahead of the front will turn again out of
the northwest in its wake, with low (10-30%) chances of gale-force
gusts across the outer waters through the weekend. -Picard/JLiu
