Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Cleveland OH
301 PM EDT Sun Jun 1 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain influential over the region through
Tuesday. As the surface high moves east on Tuesday, a warm front
will move through the area. A cold front will slowly move
through the Great Lakes region on Wednesday and Thursday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Surface high pressure with an upper trough departing to the east
and an upper ridge approaching from the west will allow for dry
weather through the near term period. The main weather interest
will be some sky obscuration due to smoke in the upper levels of
the atmosphere that is advecting south from Canada on the back
side of the upper trough. A thicker plume is moving through the
region this afternoon and another dense plume will move through
on Monday afternoon and evening and have the forecast as mostly
sunny/partly cloudy instead of sunny/clear to reflect the smoke.
Currently do not believe that enough smoke will mix to the
surface to allow for a haze to develop and reduce visibility but
will need to monitor this for Monday with the next potent round
of smoke. This smoke is also taking a degree or two off the
magnitudes of the high and low temperatures through the near
term period and most folks probably won`t see 70 degrees this
afternoon and 80 degrees on Monday, but this should also keep
temperatures up a bit tonight and prevent a large frost threat
in NE OH and NW PA and lows will be in the upper 30s to 40s.
Otherwise, high pressure will continue to settle into the region
and west to northwest winds will back tonight to the southwest.
A lake breeze is likely to develop on Monday afternoon and a
west to northwest wind should enter the lakeshore areas. Backed
flow and warm advection into the region should allow for lows on
Monday night to be warmer with a mix of 40s and 50s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Quiet and warm start to the short term period as an upper ridge
slowly builds east while an upper level shortwave approaches from
the west. Tuesday will remain dry under the ridge before cloud cover
gradually increases from the west on Wednesday with the arrival of
shortwave aloft. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible on
Wednesday with highest PoPs remaining confined to Northwest Ohio on
Wednesday evening. Warm and moist air from the Gulf will advect into
the region leading to high temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday to
rise into the 80s. A few spots across Northwest Ohio may push the
upper 80s each afternoon. Warm overnight lows settle in the mid to
upper 60s.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Active weather with periods of showers and thunderstorms are
expected as an upper level trough with multiple disturbances move
into region through the weekend. There remains the potential for
heavy rainfall late in the week given the anomalously high PWATs and
repeated chances for showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures will
gradually cool through the long term with the frontal passage,
though highs will remain in the mid to upper 70s through Sunday.
&&
.AVIATION /18Z Sunday THROUGH Friday/...
VFR conditions are expected across the airspace with high
pressure across the region. The main aviation concern will be
smoke in the upper levels of the atmosphere that will present a
high ceiling at times with smoke providing some amount of
obscuration. A more concentrated round is moving through the
region this afternoon with another round expected Monday
afternoon and evening. Otherwise, dry conditions are expected
with little to no low level cloud cover. Winds will start west
to northwest and back to the southwest tonight with high
pressure entering the region. A lake breeze should develop on
Monday and allow for west to northwest winds to return to KCLE.
Outlook...VFR expected through Tuesday night. Periodic showers
and thunderstorms with non-VFR are expected Wednesday through
Friday.
&&
.MARINE...
High pressure will continue to build east over the eastern Great
Lakes through the middle of the week. This will allow for southwest
flow 10-15 knots today to diminish. Quiet marine conditions tonight
through mid-week with offshore flow 10 knots or less. Southerly to
southwesterly winds increase to 15-20 knots ahead of a cold front
that will stall west of Lake Erie on Wednesday and Thursday. The
cold front will cross east on Friday allowing for winds to turn
westerly.
