Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Gray ME
657 PM EDT Tue May 20 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure gradually builds in from the north providing
mostly dry, yet cool conditions through the better part of
tomorrow. The next upper low approaches from the west bringing
increasing chances for showers late Wednesday. A surface low
tracks near southern New England into the Gulf of Maine Thursday
into Friday bringing widespread rain with cool northeast winds.
The upper low slowly crosses New England Saturday for showery
weather followed by a drying and warming trend Sunday into
Monday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
700 PM Update... Other than loading in the latest surface
observations and making some minor adjustments to sky cover and
winds, the inherited forecast remains on track. A cool and
mostly cloudy evening will continue.
Previously...
Low pressure south of Nova Scotia will drift southeast this evening
while a spoke of vorticity drops south through western New England.
This feature will bring chances for scattered showers, mainly across
New Hampshire through the first part of tonight. Clouds will thin
from NE to SW tonight while portions of southern NH remain mostly
cloudy into Wednesday morning. Lows will range from the upper 30s
across northern zones to the low 40s south of the mountains. There
will be some potential for patchy frost across the north, mainly
within sheltered locations at or above 1KFT.
&&
.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Surface high pressure nosing in from the north will likely keep the
area mostly dry Wednesday with cool onshore winds. There will
likely be some breaks of sun, while skies will trend towards
mostly cloudy. Steady northeast to east winds will gust 25 to 30
mph along the coast with highs generally in the 50s across the
area.
The next upper low approaching from the west will spread
moisture into the forecast area late Wednesday with shower
chances increasing from SW to NE Wednesday night. Rain will be
likely across southwest NH by daybreak Wednesday. Lows Wednesday
night will generally be in the 40s.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Starting Thursday...A 500 mb shortwave out ahead of the upper low
will lift from the Mid-Atlantic to the northeast and bring a
deepening surface low toward the region that will likely cross the
near the Maine coast or over the Gulf of Maine Thursday night into
Friday. This will spread a steady, soaking rainfall northward
through the area through the day on Thursday that will likely
continue through Friday morning before tapering off from south to
north later in the day on Friday. In additional to this, a period of
a gusty east to northeast winds of 20-30 mph is possible from
Thurday into Thursday night and as potentially 35-40 mph near the
coast, making it feel pretty raw out as temps will probably be
mostly in the 40s. Rainfall amounts are generally expected be
between 0.25-0.50" across northern areas and 0.50-1.00" to the south
and along the coast. There are higher probabilities of seeing over
an inch of rain over southern NH and into SW ME, so the forecast has
1.00-1.50" of rain in these areas.
It should be stressed that it will also feel like winter in the
mountains on Thursday and Friday with potentially dangerous
conditions for hikers and those recreating. Brisk winds will
bring wind chills below freezing and even into the single digits
to teens in the higher elevations. Accumulating snow is also
possible in the Whites above 3000 ft in elevation with several
inches in the highest elevation.
The upper low crosses slowly eastward over the weekend, and
while steadier precip is not expected, it will bring a continued
chance of showers with chances currently looking a little lower
into Sunday. For Monday into Tuesday, there`s uncertainty as to
whether a ridge will be able to build in or if the low pressure
will remain more of an influence, so the NBM PoPs of 20-30%
will do for now.
Temperatures follow a warming trend from Saturday into early next
week but still remaining below normal for the weekend then back
closer to seasonal normals early next week.
&&
.AVIATION /00Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Short Term...Broken clouds with cigs around 3000 feet will
continue to create fluctuating conditions between MVFR to VFR
tonight. Skies will be similar tomorrow with broken to scattered
and cigs around 3000 feet. Clouds thicken and lower Wednesday
night with chances for rain increasing from SW to NE. This will
favor a transition to MVFR and possibly IFR by Wednesday
morning.
Long Term...IFR restrictions are likely with LIFR possible
Thursday through at least the first part of Friday as low
pressure approaching from the south and moving across the Gulf
of Maine brings widespread rainfall and gusty east to northeast
winds of 25 to 35 kt possible, especially near the coast.
Conditions are forecast to start to improve later in the day
Friday as the low lifts to the north, but showers and flight
restrictions may continue over portions of the area into the
weekend.
&&
.MARINE...
Short Term...High pressure remains north of the waters while low
pressure drifts southeast of Nova Scotia through the period. NE
winds will turn easterly Wednesday with winds and seas generally
stay below SCA thresholds into Wednesday night. Easterly winds
increase towards Wednesday morning with gusts approaching 25
kts.
Long Term...Conditions continue to deteriorate over the waters Thursday
as low pressure approaches from the south through the day and then
crosses the water Thursday night and Friday. There is increasing
potential for gales with this system, but conditions look to start
coming down to SCA levels through the day Friday with continued
improvement into Saturday. A northwest flow looks to set up to
finish up the weekend into Monday as low pressure lingers northeast
of the waters, and conditions look to remain below SCA levels
during this time.
