Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Gray ME
1101 PM EDT Mon May 12 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will continue to drift east of New England through
much of the week. The result will be dry conditions and pleasant
temperatures. Most days will see 60s and 70s, with the coolest
readings near the coast. The end of the work week into the
weekend will feature yet another slow moving low pressure system
that will increase rain chances. It does not look like a washout
at this time, but showers and thunderstorms will be possible
each day beginning around Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM TUESDAY MORNING/...
1050pm Update...Temperatures have been cooling steadily, with
breaks in the cloud band forming. Still a relatively warm
evening at this hour in southern NH, with temps in the lower
60s.

745pm Update...Light showers approaching the region have
quickly eroded with mid level dry air reinforcing. There remains
a deck of clouds bisecting the CWA, and this will likely have
an impact on evening temperature trends. Thinking is locations
beneath this broken to overcast sky will be slightly slower to
cool, but the cloud base is high. Elsewhere, with winds dying
down over the next hour or so, mixing will cease and radiational
cooling will begin...tho not as favorable as last night.

Previous Discussion...
A tranquil evening is expected, as high pressure continues to keep
skies mostly clear in the area this evening. High cirrus moves into
the area overnight, with deep-layer ridging allowing for low
temperatures on the warmer side tonight. Lows in the upper 40s and
lower 50s expected.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
A very quiet tomorrow and tomorrow night is expected, as
high pressure continues to work its way in from the northwest. Clear
skies and dry air will persist through the period, with dewpoints in
the low 40s through most of the day. An upper-level low over the
southeastern US will allow a slow-moving surface low to form across
the mid-atlantic. This system will not impact New England tomorrow,
but some high clouds from this system could spread over northern New
England as upper-level winds transport them up into Canada and then
southeasterly into the area.

Along the coast, northeasterly winds
tomorrow morning should hamper temperatures from warming. Tomorrow
afternoon, winds shift to southerlies and will allow for a sea
breeze to works its way into the area. This should allow areas
across the coast and adjacent coastal plains to run quite a bit
cooler on high temperatures than the rest of NH and western ME.

Ridging holds on tomorrow night, and should help suppress moisture
to the south. This should allow for cloudier skies across southern
NH, with more clear skies further to the north. Lows should
generally bottom out into the low-40s, maybe some upper 30s in the
mountains.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
1050pm Update: Not much to improve on previous messaging. Will
add that with lack of additional forcing ahead of warm front
Friday, diurnal convection may be favored towards the mountains
and higher terrain. Saturday timing of frontal locations will
be key. Cold front is trending to exit the eastern Great Lakes
during the morning, with a good portion of the forecast area
perhaps in the warm sector during the daytime.

Previous Discussion...
Key Message: Dry to start the extended but becoming unsettled
again this weekend.

Impacts: After recent wet weather the main concern would be
training of showers leading to flooding. But any training
potential at this range is low confidence at best.

Forecast Details: Extended begins dry across the forecast area.
Temps will be warm as well...save for the immediate coastline
where sea breezes will knock down readings around midday.

An upper low drifting north from the Southeast may make it far
enough north for some diurnal shower activity to creep into
southern NH...but chances are not high at this time.

Upper low farther west becomes more of an influence Fri. It will
push a front east and provide a focus for diurnal convection.
Precip chances will be highest across the western half of the
forecast area...but cannot be ruled out for any of our local
area. The setup Sat looks similar...except maybe a little
delayed until the evening hours. In both cases we will be
monitoring trends with convection. CSU machine learning severe
weather probabilities show small but non-zero severe weather
threat Fri and Sat. And ECMWF EFI has a favorable CAPE/shear
overlap...especially Sat.

Otherwise no significant changes from the NBM consensus blend
forecast.

&&

.AVIATION /03Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Short Term...VFR expected through Wednesday morning. Any clouds
should be well above 10000ft through the period, with no
weather expected.

Long Term...VFR conditions expected to prevail thru Thu. By Fri
some local MVFR or lower conditions are possible in SHRA...with
CIGs slowly lowering and expanding into the weekend. IFR
conditions are possible...but will depend on how quickly upper
low tracks up the East Coast.

&&

.MARINE...
Short Term...Winds diminish this evening. Light and variable
winds expected through Wednesday morning with seas of 2-4ft
likely through the same timeframe.

Long Term...Winds and seas expected to remain below SCA
thresholds. Late in the work week rain showers will move in from
the south and slowly into the weekend lift north across all
waters.
