Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
143 AM PST Sat Jan 18 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Quiet weather with cool to seasonal temperatures will
be the forecast this weekend as into next week as Nevada remains
under northerly flow aloft. The next chance at precipitation wont
be until next Saturday as a weak system clipping eastern Nevada
has the potential to bring a few snow showers across the higher
elevation terrain.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Saturday and Sunday

Quiet weather pattern continues thanks to Rex blocking pattern
over the eastern Pacific. Nevada will remain under N to NW flow
aloft thanks to the aforementioned Rex block, which is a pattern
that consists of a upper level high pressure ridge directly north
of a cutoff upper level low pressure area. This creates a figure 8
air flow pattern that act as a wall stagnating mid level westerly
flow. Which means the storm track is forced well north into
Canada on the western flank of the block and on the eastern flank
of the block dry northerly flow. So for Nevada under the eastern
flank of this block, dry conditions with cool to seasonable
temperatures and light to breezy W to NW winds will continue. The
pattern wont be completely monotone, as periodic dry tailing cold
fronts will push through increasing clouds and dropping
temperatures, but providing little actual moisture. Temperatures
will be cool for the weekend under a modified Canadian air mass,
Highs will show a NE to SW gradient ranging from the upper 20s
across NE Elko county to the mid 40s across SW Nye county.
Overnight lows will also follow this gradient as well ranging in
the mid single digits above for eastern Elko county to the upper
teens farther west. Winds will be light out of the NW at 5 MPH to
10 MPH across N NV, and breezy out of the NW across central NV at
5 MPH to 15 MPH with gusts to 20 MPH possible across Nye and White
Pine counties.

.LONG TERM...Monday through next Saturday

An upper-level trough and attendant dry cold front will bring
cold temperatures to much of central and northeastern Nevada
Monday. High temperatures are most likely to remain below freezing
across north-central, northeastern and eastern Nevada where a
modest north wind will remain, reaching up to 15-20 mph across
US-50 southward. Most valleys in ELko and White Pine county have
a 75% chance or higher of staying in the upper 20s to lower 30s
for highs. Lows Monday night will be similarly cold in the single
digits.

Rising 500 mb heights associated with an amplified northeast
Pacific ridge sliding eastward will provide a quick warmup for
Tuesday with highs back into the 30s and 40s. Gradual warming,
light winds and dry conditions will continue through the Thursday
time frame as high pressure remains firm in place across the
Pacific coastal states, northern Rockies and Great Basin regions.
Above normal temperatures with highs in the 40s and lows in the
teens are expected.

Cluster analysis and probabilistic ensemble guidance are
suggesting a return to a more active weather pattern with
troughing across the western U.S. for the weekend time frame.
However, a continued northwest storm trajectory typically does not
yield sufficient Pacific moisture fetch to produce substantial
rain and snow across the area. Here are some probabilities of
seeing one tenth of an inch or more of liquid equivalent for
select locations across northern and central Nevada for Friday
morning through Monday morning:

Austin - 50%
Battle Mountain - 70%
Elko - 70%
Ely - 60%
Eureka - 65%
Pequop Summit - 70%
Spring Creek - 70%
Tonopah - 40%
Wells - 70%
West Wendover 25%
Winnemucca - 60%

Winds overall will be light through Thursday, picking up Friday
and Saturday ahead of the expected trough and cold front.
