Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
128 AM PST Thu Jan 30 2025
.SYNOPSIS...An area of high pressure will move over our region today
and Friday followed by increasing Pacific moisture streaming across
northern California and northern Nevada this weekend through the
middle of next week. Much of the moisture will be intercepted by the
Sierra but there is some potential for precipitation to spill across
the southern Great Basin Tuesday through Thursday.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Today through Friday.
A ridge will amplify over the western states today then move over
the Rockies Friday ahead of an eastern Pacific trough ushering in an
atmospheric river for Northern California and the Pacific Northwest.
This pattern will result in light winds and temperature near normal
for our region today through Friday which translates to highs 60-65
degrees across the Mojave Desert zones. Clear skies will persist
followed by increasing high clouds late Friday. The southern
periphery of the atmospheric river will brush the southern Sierra
Friday night leading to 30 to 40 percent chances of precipitation
indicated by the NBM from Mount Whitney to Aspendell and a 20
percent chance in the Owens Valley. Snow levels will be around 8000-
8500 feet.
.LONG TERM...Saturday through Thursday.
A building ridge of high pressure to our south over the southeastern
Pacific will result in warmer temperatures through the weekend.
Meanwhile, a deep closed low off the Washington/Oregon coast will
continue to usher atmospheric river moisture into the Pacific
Northwest. This AR will have minimal impact on the bulk of our
forecast area; however, moisture is likely to sag far enough south
to slam into the Sierra, with some potential for spillover
precipitation into the Owens Valley (though ensemble members are
pretty split on this occurrence). Due to the warm nature of this
moisture, snow levels look to remain well above 8000 feet,
accumulating snowfall limited to the Sierra crest. Meanwhile, expect
partly-to-mostly cloudy skies for the forecast area with mild
temperatures for early-February.
Sandwiched between the aforementioned Pacific ridge and Pacific
Northwest closed low, the region will remain under a quasi-zonal
flow through the weekend with elevated pressure gradients across the
southern Great Basin. Wind speeds will largely remain north of our
forecast area, but gusty southwest winds between 20 and 30 mph can
be expected Saturday and Sunday afternoons across south-central
Nevada, with downslope potential between 35 and 45 mph in the lee of
the Sierra.
Atmospheric river moisture will continue to sag southward heading
into next week, with precipitation chances spreading eastward across
the forecast area. In general, valley locations across the Mojave
Desert look to remain dry, but we will continue to assess the
nature, location, and magnitude of this incoming moisture as we head
closer.
&&
.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Winds follow their typical daily
pattern with speeds under 10 knots, starting off variable in the
morning, shifting the northeast in the afternoon, then going the
southwest in the evening. Skies are clear today and tonight. High
clouds start to move into the area on Friday morning.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Winds follow their typical daily pattern with speeds
under 10 knots for most locations. At KDAG, wind speeds of 10 knots
or more out of the west are expected this morning and afternoon,
decreasing in the evening. Skies remain clear until Friday morning,
when high cloud cover begins to spread over the area from west to
east.
&&
.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
procedures.
