Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
218 PM PDT Tue May 13 2025
.KEY MESSAGES...
* Scattered showers and thunderstorms continue through the
afternoon before dissipating this evening.
* A warming and drying trend returns on Wednesday with northwest
breezes and near average temperatures expected through Friday.
* Another low pressure system will impact the region this weekend,
brining an increased likelihood of cooler conditions, gusty
winds, rain and mountain snow showers.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms have blossomed
across much of the the eastern Sierra and western Nevada this
afternoon. While most of these cell have been shallow, there is
enough mid-level instability to support thunderstorm development,
40-50% chances for the Sierra and 20-30% for W.Nevada.
Showers and thunderstorms will quickly dissipate this evening as we
transition to a drier trend at least through Friday. A warm up will
also follow as W.Nevada valleys warm to near the 70 degree mark on
Wednesday and then the mid-70s by Thursday (upper 50s to mid-60s for
Sierra valleys). Overall, expecting drier conditions with light W-NW
breezes through Friday.
As we head into next weekend, you guessed it, we`ll have another
spring low pressure system drop into the region, giving us
another cool down with gusty winds and chances for rain and
mountain snow showers. Signals for gusty winds have trend up for
Saturday, with 35-45% odds for seeing westerly gusts over 35 mph.
At the same time we`ll likely see scattered showers across region
with a 20-35% chance of thunderstorms as we destabilize aloft as
the core of the low moves through. While some track uncertainties
remain with the lows, the best precipitation chances look to
favor areas northward of US-50 on Saturday before tracking south
and concentrating along areas south of US-50 on Sunday. Fuentes

.AVIATION...
* Areas of IFR/MVFR conditions and mountain obscurations in areas
of scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Snow
levels rising to around 6500 ft msl this afternoon but any
accumulations remain unlikely on paved surfaces.
* Best potential for thunderstorms today will be across Sierra
terminals with 40-50% chances through 03z this evening for
KTRK/KTVL/KMMH. W.NV terminals will see 20-35% chances.
* Patchy areas of FZFG are possible at KTRK after 10z tonight due
to recent precipitation and decreasing sky cover overnight.
