Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
1011 PM PDT Wed May 21 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Warm and dry conditions are expected through the week
with many desert locations creeping towards triple digits.
Afternoon breezes will increase Thursday and Friday as a weather
system moves through to our north but dry conditions will
continue. Warm and dry weather will persist into early next week.
&&

.UPDATE...Locally breezy conditions early this evening, otherwise
quiet weather areawide. Forecast trends look good, so no update
planned.
&&

.PREV DISCUSSION...
717 PM PDT Wed May 21 2025

.SHORT TERM...Today through Friday night.

A weak shortwave trough will push across the western states on
Thursday and Friday, mainly working to enhance wind speeds. The
boost in wind speeds may also help deepen vertical mixing and
allow temperatures to eclipse 100 degrees for the first time this
year at Las Vegas. Winds look to remain a bit below thresholds
for advisory products on Thursday and Friday.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through Tuesday.

Forecast model guidance has the Thursday/Friday system pushing
out of the area Saturday morning, leaving us with lingering
breezes and slightly cooler temperatures. However, forecast highs
on Saturday will remain 2-5 degrees above normal for the time of
year. A weak and fast moving high pressure system will move across
the area from Sunday into Monday delivering dry conditions, warmer
temperatures and a light, diurnally forced wind regime. For Tuesday
and Wednesday the balance of the GFS, European and associated
ensemble models are showing additional weak troughing over our
area. Should this occur, we could see more seasonal temperatures
due to some cloud cover and a cooler air mass. In addition, there
is around a 30% chance that a cutoff low will eventually form
just off the southern California coast by around Thursday (the
operational GFS and European models are buying into this
solution). Some convection will even be possible if the low center
were to track through the CWA. In any event, trends will have to
be monitored over the coming days as we`re looking at a
complicated, weak flow system.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Expect
southwesterly winds and quiet weather overnight. Thursday morning,
winds could go southeasterly for a few hours before shifting to
south southwest with gusts of 20 to 25 knots around noon. Gusts
should end around sunset. VFR conditions through the period.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 00Z Forecast Package...The main concern for
this period will be gusty southwesterly winds Thursday. Overnight,
expect quiet weather, aside from the usual breezy westerly winds in
the Barstow area. Winds will increase Thursday, with afternoon gusts
of 15 to 30 knots common across the region. Gusts should decrease in
most areas around sunset, but winds will be a little stronger than
Wednesday night. VFR conditions through the period.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
procedures.
