Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
257 AM PDT Fri Apr 11 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Record high temperatures today before an upper trof
and cooler air mass move into the region Saturday. Low probability
of showers Saturday for northern Humboldt and Elko Counties, no
significant accumulation expected. Warming trend early next week
with mostly dry weather. 10% probability for diurnally driven
afternoon showers with any effects relegated to the high terrain.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday Night.
Southwesterly flow over the forecast area today as the upper ridge
progresses east while a deep upper trof begins to move into
CONUS. Record to near record high temperatures today with all
five official climate sites, Winnemucca, Elko, Ely, Eureka, and
Tonopah, in contention to break their respective daily high
temperature records. Daytime high temperatures will be in the low
70s to low 80s with overnight lows in the mid 30s to mid 40s.
Otherwise partly to mostly cloudy skies today with high and mid
level clouds continuing to stream thru the Great Basin from the
southwest. West-southwesterly surface winds will again be breezy
this afternoon with gusts 20 to 25 mph, slightly stronger across
White Pine County at 30 mph, easing overnight.
Shift in the weather Saturday as an upper trof moves into the
western U.S. as noted. Numerical model solutions in agreement
that a stronger gradient will pass thru the PacNW with weaker
effects further south. Meaning that the stronger dynamic forcing
associated with the surface frontal boundary will remain north of
Nevada and only clip northern Nevada. However this will be enough
to produce isolated light rain showers across northern Humboldt
and Elko Counties beginning Saturday morning. No significant
accumulation is expected with showers dissipating in the evening.
Surface winds shift northwesterly Saturday and remain breezy with
gusts 25 to 30 mph across the forecast area. Winds ease overnight
along with skies clearing. Daytime high temperatures will range
from upper 50s near the Oregon and Idaho borders to mid to upper
70s in northern Nye County. North to south spread in overnight
low temperatures as well with mid to upper 20s along the Oregon
and Idaho borders, upper 30s across northern Nye County.
&&
.LONG TERM...Sunday through next Friday.
Models are showing an upper ridge over the west coast on Sunday
with a weak disturbance in southern California. The trough is not
expected to produce much in the way of rainfall, during the
afternoon on Sunday. Highs will generally be in the 60s with low
70s in central Nevada. Afternoon breezes to 25 to 30 mph are
possible. Look for quiet conditions during the overnight with lows
in the 30s and 40s.
Monday and Tuesday, the aforementioned weak disturbance is
forecast to retrograde towards the southwest, closing off just off
the coast of California. Heights will rise slightly Monday and
Tuesday under a southwest flow aloft. Afternoon highs will warm,
forecast to be in the low to mid 70s, though slightly cooler
weather passable in central Nevada as more cloud cover is
expected there. Winds will be breezy in the afternoons under a
south to southeast wind Monday 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 20 mph
or so, becoming west to southwest Tuesday. Overnight lows will
range in the 40s.
The closed low will be wobbling over the eastern Pacific Wednesday
through Friday. There is uncertainty in the placement and timing
of this feature and if it remains offshore. For now, pops have
been kept below fifteen percent. Highs will be in the 70s with
overnight lows in the 30s and 40s.
&&
.AVIATION...VFR conditions at all sites through the next 24 hours.
Afternoon gusts around 20KT expected at KEKO, KELY and KTPH today.
&&
.HYDROLOGY...Near record warmth is expected in portions of
Northern and Central Nevada thru the end of the week. This will
accelerate snowmelt and enhance runoff into area creeks and
rivers.
Creeks and rivers that are susceptible to rapid water level rises
will be most impacted. Waterways affected include, but are not
limited to Martin Creek in Humboldt County, the Owyhee River in Elko
County, the Bruneau River in Elko County, the Jarbidge River in Elko
County, and Salmon Falls Creek in Elko County.
The latest official forecast no longer indicates that Salmon Falls
Creek will move into action stage before temperatures cool this
weekend. However, while no official forecast exists for the Jarbidge
River and the Bruneau River, flow trends from the last few days
indicate that it is likely that the Jarbidge and Bruneau will reach
action stage by this evening. Not anticipating either river to reach
minor flood stage before this weekend. Action stage is the level
which some type of mitigation is needed in preparation for possible
minor flooding. Water may cause minor impacts and be a nuisance to
persons near the creek.
Residents and outdoor enthusiasts are urged to exercise caution when
walking near rapidly flowing, cold water. Hypothermia can occur
quickly if someone were to fall into cold, swift water with risk of
also being carried downstream.
