.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 233 PM CST Thu Feb 6 2025
This afternoon - Friday:
Clear skies across our area this afternoon with temperatures in
the mid 30s to low 40s as of 2 PM. Water vapor imagery shows
some moisture passing through at higher levels with a very dry
air mass toward the surface. With this we`ll continue to see a
few passing high clouds through this evening.
The upper-level pattern shows fairly zonal flow across the
central CONUS associated with very weak ridging over Mexico and
southern Texas. We`re seeing a merger of the Polar and
Subtropical jets along this zonal flow. Today and tomorrow this
jet merger is helping keep the colder air to our north allowing
temperatures to rise into the 40s each afternoon with mostly
sunny skies. Clear skies at night as well as the dry air mass
across the region will allow temperatures to plummet at night,
dropping into the teens by daybreak Friday morning.
Friday evening - Sunday:
We`re watching a trough off the coast of Oregon and Washington
for our next weather-maker Friday night into Saturday with a
leading shortwave ejecting off of the upper-level trough and
racing along the strong westerly flow towards our area. We`ll
see the development of the associated surface low over eastern
Colorado/western Kansas Friday night. This will bring a
transition to southeasterly winds Friday afternoon with winds
dropping back off Friday evening. Clouds will start to increase
Friday afternoon as well going into Friday evening as we see
ramped-up moisture advection wrapping around the northeast
quadrant of the surface low passing to our south. As we remain
north of the surface low we will see a shift back to easterly
surface winds as low passes to our south, pulling back in cooler
surface temperatures which drop into the low-to-mid 20s
Saturday morning. Meanwhile, the warm conveyor belt aloft will
continue to pull warmer, moist air up from the south at around
900-850 mb. This creates an overrunning warm-air scenario with
high potential for freezing drizzle to the north of the surface
low across much of our area again. Model soundings suggest good
potential for freezing drizzle supported by isentropic ascent
starting around 06Z and continuing through around 15Z with a
transition over to snow grains or light snow as the low exits
off to the east around 18Z Saturday morning. Once again, QPF
will be light, so ice accumulations will be minimal, but as
we`ve seen even light icing can cause problems on untreated
roadways.
Meanwhile, across northeast Nebraska on Friday night into
Saturday, sounding profiles show a cold enough environment for
light snow rather than freezing drizzle. Accumulations generally
up to 0.5 inch expected with the greater potential for
accumulating snow staying to the north across South Dakota.
Seasonably cool temperatures remain in place through the rest of
the weekend with highs in the low-to-mid 30s and lows Sunday and
Monday morning dropping down into the upper-single-digits to mid
teens.
Monday - Wednesday:
The upper-level trough finally pushes into the CONUS next week
setting up the potential for a couple rounds of light snow next
week. The greatest potential as of now looks to be Monday night
into early Tuesday though another round appears possible Tuesday
night into Wednesday. Temperatures drop behind this first system
Monday night into Tuesday with highs back down into the teens to
low 20s for Tuesday and Wednesday setting up any precipitation
to fall as snow. Overnight lows expect to fall into the single
digits with wind chills back down below zero.
As of now, none of the systems next week look to bring an
exciting amount of much needed snow.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z SATURDAY/...
Issued at 1115 PM CST Thu Feb 6 2025
VFR conditions will prevail through most of the forecast period
with mainly passing mid and high-level cloudiness. A possible
exception is at KLNK between 08/00z-08/06z when some models
indicate MVFR ceilings developing. Light northeast winds will
switch to southeast after daybreak Friday before increasing to
14-15 kt by late morning. Gusts up to 25-26 kt appear most
probable at KOFK and KLNK on Friday afternoon.
