.SHORT TERM /THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Issued at 415 AM CST Sat Jan 18 2025
Early morning radar shows persistent flurries and snow showers
mainly across central Nebraska. Can see a dusting of snow on
some roadways in webcam imagery though trends in radar returns
has been down over the last few hours. Expect the diminishing
trend will continue with just a few isolated flurries remaining
by mid morning. However another short wave will push a reinforcing
cold front through Nebraska later today into tonight
accompanied by some mid level FGEN and deformation. This will
reinvigorate flurries and snow showers across central and
western Nebraska with an indication for some enhancement across
northwest Nebraska in the Black Hills Convergence Zone where
there is a better than even chance for additional snow
accumulations of around three quarters of an inch. Temperatures
today in the arctic air will remain quite cold with highs only
in the teens north of I-80 and in the lower 20s to the south. It
will also be quite blustery through this afternoon with
northerly winds gusting 30 to 35mph at times keeping daytime
wind chills in the zero to 10 below range.
A cold weather advisory goes into effect this evening and
continues into Tuesday as surface high pressure continues to
build down form the north with progressively colder temperatures
and lower wind chills. Lows tonight, Sunday night, and Monday
night will generally range from 5 to 10 below zero south of I-80
to 10 to 15 below zero north of Hwy 2. Highs Sunday will range
from near 20 south of I-80 to the single digits north of Hwy 2,
and by Monday highs will only be in the low to mid teens south
of I-80 and near zero near the SD border.
And while winds will be gradually diminishing, wind chills during
the overnight hours will be dangerously cold with readings of
15 to 25 below zero south of Hwy 2, and down to 30 below zero to
the north. The coldest period of this cold snap will be late
sunday night into early Monday morning when there will be a 20
to 40 percent chance of wind chills lower than 30 below zero. If
conditions trend cooler an upgrade to an Extreme Cold Warning
may be necessary for a portion of central and western Nebraska
north of Hwy 2.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Issued at 415 AM CST Sat Jan 18 2025
From Tuesday onward, the very deep and expansive upper trof
encompassing most of the lower 48 will gradually move east,
though the only significant riding will remain along the Pacific
coast. As successive Pacific coast ridges try to move eastward
they quickly lose amplitude and result in a weaker trof
lingering over the Plains through late next week with a gradual
transition to a split flow regime next weekend. Evolution of
this pattern will allow for a gradual warming trend but still
keep temperatures generally below normal through the end of next
week. This also looks to be a dry pattern for central and
western Nebraska as moisture is very limited with no direct flow
from either the Pacific or the Gulf, though there may potential
for some light snow showers mid to late next week as a low moves
by to our north across the Dakotas.
