KEY MESSAGES:
*Friday-Saturday: valley freezing rain and heavy mountain snow
creating hazardous travel conditions across Northern Rockies.
*Saturday afternoon-evening: snow squall threat across west
central and southwest Montana.
*Sunday-Monday: arctic airmass will move west of the Continental
Divide.
*Middle of next week: model agreement on significant snow
accumulation event across southwest Montana and Lemhi County.
High pressure and the related stagnant airmass will remain over
the Northern Rockies through midday Friday. Anticipate continued
strong valley temperature inversions, with reductions in air
quality, during this time.
The first winter storm system in a multiday storm cycle will arrive
over the Northern Rockies Friday afternoon, producing widespread
travel impacts, including freezing rain (mainly valleys/low
elevations), snow/blowing snow (mainly high elevations/passes), and
mixed precipitation. Global models suggest that a surge of
relatively warm Pacific moisture will quickly warm air
temperatures above freezing and increase winds over the terrain
Friday evening and overnight. This sudden warming, combined with
valley ground temperatures that will be very slow to warm from the
strong temperature inversions in place during the past couple of
weeks, will result in freezing rain and flash freezing to occur at
air temperatures well above freezing Friday evening through
Saturday morning. Be prepared for travel conditions to deteriorate
suddenly.
The second phase of the upcoming winter storm cycle will occur
during the day Saturday, when westerly flow and cooling aloft
will allow intense bands of snow to develop across west central
and southwest Montana. These banded snow events can support snow
squalls, when the combination of intense snow, low visibility, and
rapidly changing road conditions can lead to multi-vehicle
pileups.
The third phase (and beyond) of the forthcoming storm cycle will
occur Sunday evening through early next week, when an arctic airmass
is anticipated to move west of the Continental Divide. In addition
to below zero degree wind chill (particularly near the Divide), some
models suggest that another subtropical surge of moisture will move
over the Northern Rockies. Even more model agreement exists (nearly
90 percent probability) in suggesting that an intense low pressure
circulation will move over southwest Montana and Lemhi County
Idaho around the middle of next week, producing a significant
snow accumulation event.

.AVIATION...High pressure over the Northern Rockies air space
will weaken through Friday, ahead of a significant, multi-day
winter storm cycle (beginning Friday afternoon). The combination
of valley fog and stratus will slowly erode through Friday midday,
with the lowest flight categories concentrated among northwest
Montana air fields. Winds from the west-southwest at ridgetop and
above will intensify to greater than 40 knots from now through
Friday. Clouds will also increase over the region on Friday, as a
surge of subtropical moisture moves into the air space. Terrain
obscurations will return after 31/1500Z.
