.DISCUSSION...
KEY MESSAGES:
- Gusty north to north east winds later today into Thursday bring
raw backcountry conditions and choppy water on area lakes
Temperatures will be much cooler today compared to recent days
behind the cold front that moved through the Northern Rockies
Wednesday. Afternoon highs are likely to top out around 5 to 10
degrees below normal for most locations. Satellite and radar
images show the front is still making its through southwest
Montana this morning, and will continue to produce light to
moderate snowfall along the Continental Divide through mid
morning. Continuous snowfall will become more showery in nature
this afternoon across most of western Montana and north-central
Idaho.
A brief return to high pressure is expected Friday into early
Saturday, though it appears short-lived. Forecast models are
showing another Pacific cold front moving across the Northern
Rockies late Saturday into Sunday, that will bring more mountain
snowfall, and cooler, breezy conditions. This round of active
weather isn`t expected to be as cold as the more recent event, so
valleys will see mostly rain, perhaps a mix of rain and snow.
An active weather pattern will remain over the region through the
first half off next week, then a potential drying and warming
trend returning to round out the week.

.AVIATION...
Satellite and radar images continue to show the cold front slowly
making its way through southwest Montana this morning. Light to
moderate snowfall will continue for locations along the
Continental Divide, including KBTM through mid-morning, around
17/1400Z. Elsewhere across western Montana and north-central Idaho
will have breezy northerly winds, with gusts around 20kts this
afternoon between 17/1900Z - 18/0200Z, along with scattered rain
and snow showers. A slight warming and drying period is expected
Friday through early Saturday.
