.DISCUSSION...
Rest of Today through Friday Night...
Another round of snow is expected across the region beginning
tonight and lasting through Friday night. With this, travel will
be impacted once again from falling and blowing snow. Stay weather
aware if traveling Friday and consider delaying travel if
possible. For the latest road conditions, call 511, or visit
511mt.net (MT) and map.wyoroad.info (WY).
Our next round of snow comes from an open wave that is expected
to progress through the region Friday. With this, precipitation
amounts are not forecast to be all that high (generally 0.10 to
0.40 inches), but the atmospheric temperature profile will be
favorable for snow that accumulates efficiently (snow ratios up to
20:1). While there is good ascent through the dendritic growth
layer with this system, the overall ascent is not overly
impressive. With that said, good upslope flow into the hills and
mountains to the northwest of Billings will enhance snowfall in
this region. As we get into Friday afternoon, a secondary push of
energy in the open wave will end this upslope enhancement and push
the snow east through the evening and night, ending it from west
to east. By 5am Saturday morning, snow is expected to be done
across the lower elevations. During this time, winds are not
forecast to be very strong, limiting the blowing snow risk. Gusts
in the teens to 20s (mph) will be common though so localized
blowing snow is still likely. While a bit of uncertainty still
remains, snow amounts are expected to range from 2 to 8 inches
over the lower elevations and 10 to 15 inches over the Beartooth-
Absaroka and Crazy Mountains. Over the lower elevations,
probabilities are highest for 6 or more inches of snow north and
west of Billings (50 to 80 percent chance). Sheridan County has
the lowest chance of seeing more significant snow as there is only
a 15 to 20 percent chance of seeing 2 or more inches of snow. In
the mountains, the highest snow totals are forecast in the
Beartooth- Absaroka Mountains.
As far as winter weather products go, Winter Storm Warnings are
in effect for the Beartooth/Absaroka and Crazy Mountains, as well
as northern Sweet Grass, Wheatland, Golden Valley, and Musselshell
counties. The rest of south-central and south-eastern Montana,
outside of the Pryor and Bighorn Mountains, is under a Winter
Weather Advisory. At this time, Sheridan County, Wyoming remains
without a winter weather product.
Temperatures Friday will be colder than today with highs in the
single digits to lower 20s. Friday night will also be cold as
temperatures drop into the single digits below zero for most.

Saturday through Thursday...
Main forecast concerns are on very cold temperatures and chances for
snow.
Snow chances persist over the higher terrain on Saturday then a weak
shortwave moves through in northwest flow Sunday into Sunday night
followed by an arctic front. There is high confidence on below
normal temperatures Monday then persisting through at least
Wednesday then medium confidence on below normal temperatures the
remainder of the work week. The NBM is indicating nearly a 100
percent chance for lows to dip below zero Monday night with around
a 75 percent chance of lows dropping below zero both Tuesday
night and Wednesday night. Expect highs in the single digits to
teens above zero and lows in the single digits below zero to
teens below zero, colder in favored cold locations/valleys. Cold
weather headlines are possible next week at times when apparent
temperatures dip to around 25 below zero at times, be prepared for
the cold.
The prolonged cold stretch of weather will continue to build ice on
area rivers with the potential for a few freeze-up ice jams.
&&
.AVIATION...
The next weather system will begin to affect the western portions
of the area tonight. Winter weather conditions will spread east
across the region Friday before coming to an end from west to east
Friday night into Saturday morning. During this time, low
ceilings and reduced visibility from snow and wind will occur.
MVFR to IFR conditions will be common, with periods of LIFR to
VLIFR conditions possible under heavier areas of snow. The
mountains will be obscured through much of the period. Arends/STP
