Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New Orleans LA
315 AM CDT Tue Apr 8 2025
...New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, AVIATION, MARINE...
.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Wednesday)
Issued at 305 AM CDT Tue Apr 8 2025
Shortwave trough extended from the Carolinas to east Texas this
morning, with ridging over the Rockies. At the surface, high
pressure was centered over Texas, and over Minnesota, with a
reinforcing frontal boundary near Interstate 40. Clouds had moved
off into the Gulf, with clear skies across the area. Temperatures
were generally in the 40s at 3 AM CDT, with the exception of the
area just south of Lake Pontchartrain, where winds off the warmer
waters of the lake were holding temperatures in the 50s.
Upper flow will be northwesterly through Wednesday. The surface
high will drift southeastward, with the axis from off of the New
Jersey coast to the northeastern Gulf. Mostly clear/sunny skies on
tap for today and Wednesday with low humidities. High temperatures
generally in the lower and middle 70s, with lows tonight in the
40s to lower 50s. Not really much spread in forecast guidance, so
no real justification to make significant changes to NBM values.
&&
.LONG TERM...
(Wednesday night through Monday)
Issued at 305 AM CDT Tue Apr 8 2025
Upper flow is expected to remain primarily northwesterly through
the weekend. A northern stream shortwave moving through the Great
Lakes and Ohio River Valley will push a reinforcing cold front
through the area Thursday night or Friday morning. Pretty much no
low level return flow of moisture, with precipitable water values
remaining below an inch. I suppose a sprinkle or two of rain could
reach the surface late Thursday night over southern Mississippi,
but the threat of measurable precipitation is currently too low to
carry in the forecast. And that is pretty much the only even
remote chance of rain through the weekend into Monday.
With dry air in place, overnight lows will be a bit on the cool
side, especially Saturday morning, when most locations will have
lows in the 40s. Highs will be mainly in the 70s, but could climb
into the lower 80s by Sunday and Monday.
&&
.AVIATION...
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 305 AM CDT Tue Apr 8 2025
VFR conditions anticipated through the forecast period. Could be a
few fairly flat cumulus clouds during the afternoon, but if
there`s enough moisture to develop those, cloud bases are likely
to be well above FL040.
&&
.MARINE...
Issued at 305 AM CDT Tue Apr 8 2025
Current plan is to allow Small Craft Exercise Caution headlines to
expire at 12z as high pressure moves into the area. A couple of
quieter days of marine conditions until the reinforcing frontal
boundary reaches the waters on Friday. At that time, it looks like
perhaps a 24 hour period of 15 to 20 knot winds out of the north,
before easing again.
