...New SYNOPSIS, DISCUSSION...
.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 253 AM CST Sat Jan 18 2025
An Arctic airmass will arrive in the Midsouth Sunday. Monday
morning, apparent temperatures are expected to be in the single
digits and in the teens Tuesday. A few snow showers are possible
along the Tennessee River Sunday morning. Otherwise, dry
conditions are expected over the next seven days.

.DISCUSSION...
(Today through Friday)
Issued at 253 AM CST Sat Jan 18 2025
Rain showers and persistent thunderstorms associated with two
shortwaves are shifting across the Midsouth. The second shortwave
should shift into Middle Tennessee and Alabama around sunrise
bringing an end to any precipitation. Current temperatures are in
the middle to upper 40s. Widespread cloud cover and south winds
5-10 mph should keep temperatures in the 40s this morning with
high temperatures today ranging from the middle 40s in northeast
Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel to the lower 60s in northeast
Mississippi. Today will likely be our warmest day for at least the
next seven days.
A strong cold front will traverse the Midsouth today ushering in
the coldest airmass we have seen so far this Winter. Monday looks
to be our coldest day, featuring morning lows between 8 and 18
degrees and highs in the mid 20s to low 30s. Apparent temperatures
will likely approach Advisory criteria Monday morning, ranging
from zero to 10 degrees. These conditions are only about degree or
two above our new Advisory criteria, but a Cold Weather Advisory
may be issued today or tonight. Northern portions of the Midsouth
will likely fall below freezing tonight and remain sub-freezing
through midday Wednesday.
Next week should be dry. The synoptic pattern will become zonal
today, then northwesterly Sunday into early next week as a ridge
builds over the Intermountain West. Temperatures will slowly
moderate, but remain below normal. Expect lows in the upper teens
to middle 20s Tuesday through Friday with highs in the middle 30s
to middle 40s.

.AVIATION...
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 1131 PM CST Fri Jan 17 2025
Scattered -SHRAs will continue overnight near all sites and
diminish around 18/12Z. Temporary MVFR/IFR VSBYs are possible with
the heaviest SHRAs, but will not prevail. MVFR CIGs will develop
over the next couple of hours and persist through the end of the
period. Some CIG improvement is possible by late afternoon
tomorrow, but should trend back to MVFR.
Hi-res model guidance suggests that there could be some --SN near
MKL near the end of the period, but confidence remains too low to
add at this time.
