Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service New Orleans LA
1127 PM CST Thu Feb 6 2025
...NEW AVIATION...
.UPDATE...
Issued at 758 PM CST Thu Feb 6 2025
After decoupling shortly after sunset, smoke from two fires (one
in St John and other in St Charles Parish) will get trapped and
spread through the boundary layer tonight. Advection fog will also
start to develop as the very moist surface air moves over the
cooler local waters and advects inland. Fog mixed with smoke as we
have seen in recent memory can be very impactful. Indeed, Friday
morning commute across the causeway and all across the south
shore will be very tricky. Elsewhere, dense fog will also be
possible but the highest chance of super fog will be over the Lake
and along the southshore. (Frye)

.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Saturday night)
Issued at 311 PM CST Thu Feb 6 2025
Fog is the primary forecast concern through the short term period
as a very warm and humid airmass continues to advect in from the
Gulf. As this warm and humid airmass passes over the cooler
nearshore waters, the temperature is forced to drop to near the
dewpoint during the overnight hours when temperatures naturally
cool into the upper 60s. Widespread dense fog can be expected
tonight, tomorrow night, and Saturday night. The fog will develop
in the evening hours along the coast and then spread inland
through the late evening and overnight hours. The fog will linger
into the mid-morning hours each day before gradually lifting into
a scattered to broken strato-cumulus deck in the late morning and
early afternoon hours as temperatures warm into the upper 70s and
lower 80s. One other concern for tonight, and possibly beyond, is
a wildfire that developed north of Lake Salvador this afternoon.
This fire is producing a smoke plume that is drifting to the
northeast and toward metro New Orleans. This smoke could combine
with the fog to create another superfog event in metro New Orleans
tonight, and if this occurs, near zero visibilities could impact
parts of metro New Orleans late tonight into tomorrow morning.

.LONG TERM...
(Sunday through Wednesday night)
Issued at 311 PM CST Thu Feb 6 2025
No change in the overall pattern is expected Sunday into Sunday
night from that seen in the short term period with warm and humid
conditions continuing. Highs will easily climb into the upper 70s
and lower 80s Sunday afternoon after a round of morning fog.
Sunday night will see the fog return as conditions remained primed
for dense advection fog to redevelop across the region. Monday
will remain warm and mild with highs nearing 80 once again, but a
weak frontal boundary slowly slipping to the south Monday
afternoon could spark off some isolated shower activity.
Conditions will begin to turn more unsettled on Tuesday and
Wednesday as a fast moving shortwave trough axis sliding through
the largely zonal flow regime aloft passes through the Lower
Mississippi Valley. Increased upper level forcing will combine
with the weak stationary front across the area to induce periods
of showers and a few thunderstorms both Tuesday and Wednesday.
The thunderstorm activity should remain below severe limits based
on a review of forecast model soundings, but some locally heavy
rainfall could be concern if the rainfall rates exceed an inch per
hour. This is due to the dormant vegetation allowing for increased
runoff issues. Beyond the heavy rainfall threat, temperatures will
remain mild with lows only cool into the lower 60s and highs
warming into the mid to upper 70s each day. Additionally, although
fog will be a lesser concern, some fog development could occur
between periods of rainfall.

.AVIATION...
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 1124 PM CST Thu Feb 6 2025
VIS and CIG reductions are highly likely through the morning
across the board. Continue to be concerned for "Superfog" over
MSY and NEW given two wildfires upstream. Due to this TEMPO 0sm
for MSY and NEW during the morning hours to highlight the best
timing of the more severe VIS reductions. Outside of the the NOLA
airports, the others will also experience LIFR VIS/CIGs. The
reductions will begin to lift by 15z and should be back to VFR for
most sites by around 18z. GPT may take a bit longer similar to
today. Otherwise, southerly flow will continue generally at or
less than 10kt. More fog and low stratus possible on Friday night.

.MARINE...
Issued at 311 PM CST Thu Feb 6 2025
Dense fog will be the primary concern across the coastal waters
each night through Monday night as a warm and humid southerly
flow remains in place. Visibilities will fall to one mile, and
more likely one quarter mile, or less starting each evening and
persisting through the mid-morning hours before briefly clearing
in the afternoon hours. Outside of the fog threat, southerly flow
of around 10 knots and seas of 3 feet or less can be expected.
