Area Forecast Discussion

.KEY MESSAGES...
- Dry with a warming trend through next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 305 AM CST Sat Feb 22 2025
The shortwave trough that brought light snow and flurries to the
region yesterday continues to drift eastward into the Middle
Mississippi Valley area early this morning. Shortwave ridging
embedded within northwest mid/upper flow will build across the
Central Plains in it`s wake. This will result in rising heights and
increasing thickness allowing temperatures to recover with most
areas seeing highs in the 40s this afternoon. Temperatures will be
tricky today with lingering snowpack across much of the area. Snow
melt will be well underway this afternoon and continue into Sunday
with better downslope flow on Sunday allowing above normal
temperatures to return to the area.
Mon-Fri...A shortwave trough moving over the Northern Plains on
Monday will drive a weak frontal boundary over the area but with
abundant low level westerly flow we are not expecting much of a
cooldown at this time with highs in the 60s anticipated for most
areas on Monday. Another mild day is expected on Tuesday but a
shortwave trough is progged to emerge from the Northern Rockies late
in the period helping to send another frontal boundary southward
into the Central Plains on Wed. This front may usher in some cooler
air but above normal temperatures are still anticipated with highs
in the upper 50s and lower 60s. An amplified mid/upper ridge over
the Central Great Basin/Rockies is progged to translate eastward Thu-
Fri while northwest mid/upper flow prevails over the Central Plains.
This is expected to result in a continuation of dry weather with
above average temperatures through the end of the work-week.
