Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID

.DISCUSSION...The morning satellite imagery showing clear skies
across the area. Temperatures today will run 3-8 degrees warmer
than yesterday as high pressure builds overhead. We`ll see
stronger sundowner winds this evening across Baker County and
along the Snake River in the Treasure Valley. Gusts to 30 mph
will be common with windier spots in Baker County (Ontario to
Huntington) seeing gusts to 45 mph through about midnight.
Current forecast is on track for today.

kt with gusts to 30 kt overnight becoming variable less than 10
kt overnight outside of the Treasure Valley. Winds aloft at
10kft MSL: SW-NW 20- 30 kt.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...Today through Friday night...High pressure
centered over the desert southwest will build over the
Rockies today, positioning E Oregon and SW Idaho in warm, dry
southwest flow aloft. Today will be the hottest day of the week
for most locations. A significant, cold Gulf of Alaska low will
approach the Pacific Northwest coast on Thursday, enhancing our
southwest flow aloft while increasing the wind gusts at the
surface. An increase in instability and lift will be enough to
support the threat of isolated thunderstorms this afternoon,
particularly in far southeast Oregon and over the mountains of
w-central Idaho. The limiting factor will be moisture, so any
storms that develop would produce little rain and be capable of
strong outflow wind gusts. The center of the GoA low will move
onshore Friday morning, sweeping a strong cold front from NW to
SE through the area Friday morning and afternoon. Windy
conditions and an increased chance (25-55%) of showers are
anticipated with the front. High temperatures will drop
significantly compared to Thursday, by approximately 10 to 20
degrees for most areas.

LONG TERM...Saturday through Wednesday...The aforementioned low
will move overhead on Saturday, lowering temperatures further by
10 to 15 degrees from Friday. Snow levels will also drop to
around 5500-7500 feet MSL. With showers continuing Saturday,
high elevation snow will become possible. The most favorable
area for the light snow will be over the west-central/central
Idaho mountains. A slight chance (15%) of thunderstorms are also
forecast Saturday afternoon. Stronger thunderstorms that
develop will be capable of producing hail. Surface winds on
Saturday will remain breezy behind the cold front, but will
decrease by Saturday night. The low will begin to weaken as it
heads northeastward on Sunday. Temperatures will remain well
below normal, but a few degrees warmer than Saturday. Lingering
showers and light mountain snow are expected through mid-day
Sunday, before tapering off from SW to NE Sunday night.

Despite the main low exiting the area, models agree that weak
upper level troughing will persist over the northwestern U.S.
early next week. Temperatures will slowly moderate each day,
reaching above normal by Tue or Wed. Convection may continue to
generate in the afternoons if enough moisture becomes available.
