Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Peachtree City GA

...Morning Area Forecast Discussion...

.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Saturday)
Issued at 302 AM EDT Fri Jun 20 2025

Key Messages:

    - Mostly dry weather returns through Saturday with only isolated
      rain chances.

    - Temperatures will become increasingly hot as an upper ridge
      builds overhead into the weekend.

Today brings the biggest forecast change that we`ve seen in quite
some time in the way of dry weather. Marginally drier air has
filtered into the northern half of the area in the wake of a weak
cold front. PoPs today are in turn largely less than ten percent
areawide with the exception of the far southern/southeast tier where
an isolated shower or thunderstorm can`t entirely be ruled out.
Still, the vast majority of the area will see no rainfall today.

Upper ridging currently centered to our west over the Arklatex
region will expand eastward by Saturday and build overhead. As such,
Saturday will bring another day of mostly dry conditions with
temperatures continuing to gradually ratchet upward. Isolated
diurnal showers and thunderstorm coverage may trend upward very
slightly Saturday afternoon in Middle Georgia, though these should
still be few and far between.

As mentioned, temperatures will warm further from today into
tomorrow. Highs today will range from near 90 in north Georgia to
the low 90s in Middle Georgia. By Saturday, highs will reach the low
to mid 90s areawide. Heat index values will be a few degrees warmer
than air temperature but remain below Heat Advisory criteria both
days.

.LONG TERM...
(Saturday night through Thursday)
Issued at 302 AM EDT Fri Jun 20 2025

Key Messages:

 - The warmest temperatures of the year so far are expected in
Georgia next week.

 - The heat may be hazardous for some population groups, and thus
Heat Advisories may be needed for a portion of the state between
Monday and Thursday.

Potential Heat Concerns Next Week:

Strong upper level ridging over the Eastern U.S. remains the driving
force in the forecast for next week. By Monday both the GEFS and EPS
are projecting a 997 mb upper ridge over the Ohio Valley. This
places Georgia on the southern side of the ridge where mid and upper
level subsidence should hinder our daily diurnal convection. As we
move into the second half of next week guidance from the GEFS and
EPS suggests a peak in 850 mb temperatures as warmer air from the
Midwest tries to rotate around the upper level ridge. This may help
the heat linger even as the strength of the upper ridge begins to
waver. When it comes to temperatures the EPS guidance is the most
bullish in pushing temperatures close to 100 across the lower
elevations of north Georgia by next Tuesday. The GEFS is more
reserved and favors a peak in the upper 90s on Wednesday. In either
case the warmest temperatures of the year so far are very likely
(>95% chance). Dewpoints near 70 degrees should combine with the
elevated temperatures to push heat index values into the 100s for
most of the region by Monday. Then peak heat index values between
100 and 107 are favored between Tuesday and Thursday. Given these
conditions the first Heat Advisory of the year is possible from our
office next week (80% chance). East central Georgia appears to have
the best odds of reaching Heat Advisory criteria (heat index value
of 105), but a Heat Advisory for the Atlanta Metro is possible (40%
chance).

The primary driver of uncertainty in the heat forecast next week
centers on the potential for cloud cover and or a couple periods of
storm activity. If any storms occur they would be most likely on
Sunday (before the ridges strength peaks) or Wednesday into Thursday
as moisture from the Atlantic and potential disturbances wrap around
the weakening upper level ridge from the northeast. While either of
these scenarios could toss a wrench into the temperature forecast
for a day, they shouldn`t prevent this from being the most
significant heat event of the year so far. It should be noted that
the GEFS and EPS means have been trending drier over the last 4-6
model runs, raising the potential for a 4 to 7 day period with
little to no rainfall in north and central Georgia.

.AVIATION...
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 126 AM EDT Fri Jun 20 2025

VFR conditions are prevalent at most TAF sites currently with the
exception of IFR cigs near CSG/MCN, and this is where IFR cigs
remain most likely at times through 12-14Z. Patchy fog and low
clouds are also possible near ATL area sites, though confidence is
not high in IFR cigs reaching these sites. VFR conditions are
expected areawide after 12-14Z with FEW/SCT cu in the 4-6 kft
range by afternoon. Winds will remain W to NW at 5 kts or less
through morning and 4-6 kts thereafter.

//ATL Confidence...06Z Update...
Low to medium confidence in morning IFR coverage.
High confidence on other elements.
