.SHORT TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Issued at 201 PM MST Fri Jan 17 2025
Currently...
Wind shift was pushing across the region. This is the leading edge
of the arctic front which was moving towards the region. The actual
arctic air was just crossing the CO/WY line and will mot arrive into
our region until late this afternoon or early evening. Temps across
the region were in the 50s at 1 pm with northeast winds
dropping south across the plains. Skies were pretty much clear
across a large majority of the plains, with the low clouds
associated with the arctic air still up along the CO/WY line.
Some wave clouds were noted along the front range mtns.

Next 24 hours...
Cold air should start to push across the Palmer Divide late this
afternoon and especially this evening. It WILL snow this evening,
and guidance shows some fairly stout snow bands developing and
pushing south across EL Paso and Pueblo counties during the
02-06Z time frame. Temps have warmed up and pavement is warm, so
a FLASH FREEZE is likely on area roadways and we may see some
snow bands that may require SNOW SQUALL Warnings this evening
over the region.
Snow will gradually push south tonight and we should see snow across
along the I-25 corridor late tonight into tomorrow morning.
Temps tomorrow will be cold and I do not thing anyone will get above
freezing tomorrow. The warmest air tomorrow will be over the San
Luis Valley. Max temps tomorrow will only reach in the 15 to 20F
range across all of the plains, with upper 20s in the SLV.
Winds tonight and tomorrow will be relatively light, but wind
chill values will nonetheless be in the 5 to 15F range tonight
and the single digits tomorrow. (NOTE - Cold weather
advisories/warnings dont get issued until apparent temps reach
-18F or colder).
Snow will likely continue along the greater I-25 corridor region
through late tomorrow afternoon. /Hodanish
&&
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Issued at 201 PM MST Fri Jan 17 2025
Saturday night will see widespread min temperatures below zero F
across the region, Temps over the plains will generally be in the
zero to negative 5 range with negative 5 to negative 20 over the
valleys and mountains. Winds over the plains will be light so wind
chill values will be similar to ambient temps, however the mountains
will be windier and wind chill values across this region will be in
the -25F to -40F range. We may need cold weather highlights for
the mountains Saturday night.
The cold air will remain over the region until Tuesday. Temperatures
during the day on Sunday will be 2 to 3 degrees cooler than
Saturdays max temps, so anticipate ambient max temps in the L20s to
mid teens Sunday. Besides some snow showers i the mountains, it
should be dry (but very cold) on Sunday.
Sunday night the 2ndry surge of arctic air will move across, and
another round of light snow will be possible. If we cloud up with
this 2ndry system, it may tend to keep the min temps up SUnday night
across the area and temps may be a few degrees warmer than Saturday
night low temps. Nonetheless, it will be cold with temps around
0F plains and negative single digits mtns/valleys.
Light snow is likely across most of the region Monday, especially
during the first part of the day. Attm, snow fall amounts don`t
appear to be that significant, with 1 to 2 inches possible.
The coldest air of this event is likely to be over the region Monday
night/Tuesday morning, and this is the time period where we will
likely see the coldest temps. Expect all areas to be below zero with
0 to negative 10 over the plains, and -5 to negative 25 over the
mtns. Winds will be more of a concern and we will likely need COLD
Temperature warnings for all of the region during this time period.
wind chill values of -20 to -50 will be possible, with the coldest
readings in the mtns.
Tuesday we will warm up. How warm still needs to be determined, but
with a lee trough developing we should see southwesterlies at the
sfc and temps warming up significantly aloft.
Another surge of arctic air will likely affect the region
starting late Wednesday into Thursday, and then warming up
Friday. This system looks relatively dry (but cold). /Hodanish

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z SUNDAY/...
Issued at 1024 PM MST Fri Jan 17 2025
Arctic front has pushed across the eastern plains this evening,
bringing widespread light snow and much cooler temperatures to
the forecast area. This has initially affected KCOS and KPUB
with low clouds and reduced VSBY due to snow producing MVFR to
IFR conditions, and will continue to do so through Saturday.
Lower clouds and the chance for some snow finally makes it over
the eastern mts and into the San Luis Valley, affecting KALS,
tomorrow morning starting around 17z.
KCOS and KPUB: MVFR to IFR conditions through 01z tomorrow, then VFR
remainder of forecast period. Greatest VSBY restrictions will occur
now until 19z tomorrow.
KALS: VFR over the next 24 hrs, though intermittent MVFR conditions
start at 17z tomorrow, then potential IFR conditions at 20z.
