.KEY MESSAGES...

* Warm and drier for this Easter weekend with light westerly winds
today that becomes breezier for Easter Sunday.

* Warmer weather extends into the beginning of Easter week with
mainly dry conditions and afternoon west breezes.

* Gradual cooling expected to begin mid next week with increased
shower chances by later next week.

.DISCUSSION...

A progressive upper short wave ridge will assist in the current
warming trend as well as bring a continuance of dry conditions to
the region through this Easter weekend period. The rather sharp
amplitude of the ridge axis will damper as this quickly settles to
the east and southeast into the Inter-mountain West later today. A
weak upper short wave will also quickly drop east and southeast into
western NV, and further flatten the upper ridge as well as set up a
brief W-E zonal flow aloft across the West Coast. The trajectory of
this upper trough will temporarily damper the ongoing warming trend.
A subsequent, more forceful upper trough will then quickly dive east
and southeast over the Sierra into western NV later Sunday afternoon
into the evening.

Although winds will be generally light from the west on Saturday,
breezier conditions will highlight passage of the second upper short
wave on Easter. Hi-res simulations show zephyr strength winds
Sunday afternoon approaching 30 mph with more wind prone areas
gusting to 35 mph. Daytime highs in the valleys will range between
the middle 60s and lower 70s on Saturday with highs Sunday
hitting in the middle to upper 70s. Sierra mountain communities
will still see highs in the 50s to lower 60s on Saturday being
followed up with highs on Sunday in the middle 50s to middle 60s.

Early next week, a nearly zonal westerly flow aloft will ensure that
the warmer spring temperatures persist across the region. The
quick passage of upper short waves over northern portions of CA/NV
will allow for westerly afternoon breezes through mid-week as
well. As high pressure weakens over the area and recedes eastward,
ensemble simulations project lower pressure over the eastern
Pacific deepening into the West Coast later next week. This will
initiate a cooling trend across the Sierra into western Nevada
that will be accompanied with increase shower chances over the
region by late next week. As always, we will continue to monitor
the upcoming forecast runs to assess trajectory and precipitation
amounts. -Amanda

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions are expected to persist for all main terminal sites
today through Sunday. Although winds will generally be light,
zephyr-like westerly afternoon winds will bring gusts to 20 kts
today with Sunday afternoon winds gusting to 25-30 kts. These
gusty conditions will increase the chances for brief periods of
light to moderate turbulence in the afternoon. With the warming
afternoon temperatures through the weekend, be advised of
increased density altitude values for western NV terminals.
