Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
1200 PM PST Wed Nov 27 2024
.SYNOPSIS...27/1145 AM.
Dry weather is expected through at least the middle of next week,
with light to moderate Santa Ana breezes at times. Temperatures
will trend upwards for the next several days, reaching warmer than
normal for this weekend. Chilly at night with some frost in wind
protected areas.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-SAT)...27/1139 AM.
Skies are slowly clearing today following the passage of the last
storm system that brought a wide range of rain amounts, anywhere
from 7+ inches in the coastal mountains of SLO County to just a
couple hundredths of an inch in eastern LA County and the AV.
With the warm, atmospheric river storm gone and the skies
clearing and a dry air mass coming in with the offshore flow,
overnight temperatures will drop like a rock tonight and over the
next few nights, especially inland areas that are sheltered from
the Santa Ana winds. Lows in some areas tonight will be 20-25
degrees cooler than this morning.
Starting late tonight and continuing at least through Saturday,
the LAX-DAG gradient will increase to around between 4 and 6mb
offshore. This will drive an increase in offshore winds and low-
to-moderate Santa Ana winds are expected. Winds will be the
strongest across the usual Santa Ana wind prone cooridor of LA and
Ventura Counties as well as portions of the Santa Lucias in SLO
County. Winds expected to be in the 20-30mph range winds some
gusts to around 40 in the mountains, peaking late night through
early afternoon hours.
The offshore flow will lead to sunny skies for Thanksgiving Day
through Saturday, except possibly some morning fog Thursday
morning. Temperatures will be trending up and humidities will be
significantly lower, bottoming out in the teens to low 20s in many
areas. Highs will be in the upper 60s to low 70s for SLO and
Santa Barbara Counties, and in the 70s for LA and Ventura
Counties. Possibly getting close to 80 in the warmer valleys on
Saturday.
.LONG TERM (SUN-WED)...27/1143 AM.
High confidence in the long term forecast, with an extended
period of dry conditions expected through mid-next week. Broad and
weak ridging over the area is likely to yield mild conditions.
Saturday, the primary weather feature of note is likely to be
moderate offshore Santa Ana Winds across the usual wind- prone
cooridor and the mountains of Ventura and Los Angeles Counties.
Some breezy winds may occur across San Luis Obispo County as well,
peaking in the early morning hours. The offshore flow will
continue dry humidites and clear skies for Saturday. Still chilly
at night in wind protected areas as the dry air and light winds
will allow excellent radiational cooling overnight, so some frost
is possible in the cooler inland areas.
Models continue a weaker but still present offshore flow well into
next week, keeping temperatures at or above seasonal norms for
several days.

.AVIATION...27/1815Z.
At 17Z at KLAX, there was no marine layer nor inversion.
Overall, Low to moderate confidence in 18z TAF Package. Timing of
cigs/vsby restrictions may vary +/- 2 hours. There is a 20%
chance of brief MVFR conds for KSBP and KSMX. There is low
confidence in cigs/vsby restrictions in KSBA, with a 30% chance of
IFR/LIFR conds from 06z to 15z. Clearing will likely be slow for
some sites, and clouds could linger all day, especially south of
Pt Conception. However, cigs should at least rise into at least
the MVFR category in most coastal and valley areas this
afternoon. Expect widespread low clouds in coastal and many valley
areas tonight, with IFR to LIFR cigs.
KLAX...Low confidence in TAF. There will be frequent changes in
cigs and vsbys through this morning. After a brief break,
cigs/vsby restrictions should return by at least 00z, if not
earlier. The afternoon/eve should consist of varying IFR,LIFR and
even VLIFR conds possible at times. Cig/vsby restrictions should
scatter out by 18z Thursday.
KBUR...Low to moderate confidence in TAF. MVFR conds are expected
through 00z with a 20 to 30% chance of IFR conds before scattering
out. Departure of cigs/vsby restrictions could vary +/- 2 hours.
&&
.MARINE...27/800 AM.
For the outer waters, there is high confidence in forecast.
Small Craft Advisory (SCA) conds are not expected thru Sun night.
For the inner waters, moderate to high confidence in winds and
seas remaining below SCA levels thru Sun night. There is a 30 to
40% chance of SCA level NE wind gusts nearshore across the inner
waters off the Central Coast and from Ventura to Malibu late
tonight and Thu morning, with less of a chance Fri morning.
