Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
142 AM PST Sat Jan 18 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
* Dry conditions will prevail through next week.
* Temperatures will remain near average, but brief cooling with
gusty ridgetop winds is possible late Sunday and Monday.
* Longer range guidance brings a potentially colder weather
system into the region by the January 25-26 weekend.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
* A weak cold front moved through the region on Friday, ushering
in a very dry airmass. We also had a slight increase in ridge-
top winds and finally a dissipation of our persistent
inversions. With the passage of the aforementioned front,
temperatures today will end up 5 to 15 degrees cooler compared
to Friday. Winds will be lighter today with mostly sunny skies
and continued dry conditions. Temperatures will increase an
additional 5-10 degrees on Sunday ahead of the next system.
* Another inside slider is still on track to arrive late Sunday
night into Monday. The ensembles show that a very dry airmass is
poised to move into the area, with PWATs below 0.10" (which is
near the record driest for that date). Thus, no precipitation
is anticipated with this system. What we will see is an increase
in east to northeast ridge-top winds (gusts 50-60 mph) and a 10
degree drop in temperatures. This may lead to choppy waters on
Lake Tahoe for Monday, possibly needing an advisory.
* Ridging returns from Tuesday through much of the remainder of
next week. As such, temperatures during this period will
increase above seasonal averages. We`ll have light winds through
this time frame, and the return of inversions with poor
dispersion.
* By next Saturday into the start of the following week, ensembles
are still trying to break down the ridging pattern. But, there
is low confidence with some solutions showing a slight ridge
while other solutions show a deep trough. -McKellar
&&
.AVIATION...
* VFR conditions will prevail across the region through the
weekend with light surface winds and limited cloud cover.
Valley inversions will continue to support areas of urban haze
and slight reductions in slantwise visibility during
overnight/morning hours for most days in the upcoming week,
mainly near KRNO.
* Mainly W-NW Sierra ridge wind gusts around 30 kt through this
weekend may produce occasional mountain wave turbulence. These
ridge winds then increase with potential for stronger NE-E gusts
up to 50 kt late Sunday night through Monday, leading to more
turbulent conditions especially near and west of the Sierra
crest. -McKellar
