.DISCUSSION...

This weekend features hot and dry weather as high pressure aloft
overspreads the western states. Daytime highs well into the 80s and
90s will pose a widespread minor to moderate HeatRisk this weekend,
so be sure to stay hydrated and limit time in the heat -- especially
in lowest western Nevada valleys where it`ll be hottest. Minor
cooling begins after Monday, but 80 and 90 degree heat continues
through Independence Day. Winds will continue to be breezy in the
afternoons throughout the weekend.

An increase in thunderstorm activity is probable next week as weak
low pressure introduces a favorable overlap of moisture and
instability to the region. The most favorable area (15-20% odds) for
thunderstorms will initially be across Lassen and far northern Washoe
County Monday and Tuesday afternoons where upper moisture is
greatest. A few showers and storms may develop in the Sierra as far
south as Mono County each afternoon, but odds reduce to 10-15% in
this area. Slight chances (15-20%) of thunderstorms expand farther
south and east Wednesday and Thursday afternoons as the low moves
onshore. The prospect of lightning also means that new fire
ignitions will be possible next week, especially given that storms
are leaning on the drier side.

A secondary low will likely maintain daily chances of thunderstorms
through the holiday weekend, but there`s too much uncertainty in
guidance to venture giving probabilities and coverage.

prevails this weekend. Thunderstorm impacts become more likely next
week, especially across NE California and far NW Nevada.
