Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
1057 AM PDT Sun May 11 2025
updated aviation discussion
.SYNOPSIS...11/321 AM.
Even through today will be cooler than Saturday temperatures will
remain well above normal. Onshore flow will strengthen next week
and bring much cooler conditions with low clouds and fog pushing
back into the valleys. There is a chance of drizzle next Tuesday.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-TUE)...11/938 AM.
***UPDATE***
Except for high clouds streaming above, overall sunny skies are
expected through the rest of today. A overall drop in temperatures
is still on track for today, as current temperatures already show
a cooling trend compared to 24 hours ago. Most areas are around
3-8 degrees colder than yesterday at the same time.
A Wind Advisory has been issued for this evening through tonight
for the Santa Barbara County Southwestern Coast, where gusts up to
50 mph are expected. Otherwise, no major changes with this
update.
***From Previous Discussion***
Cooler weather is on tap for today, but max temps will remain well
above normal. Looks for onshore trends and lowering hgts to
combine to bring 4 to 8 locally up to 12 degrees of cooling to
almost all of the area today. Even with the cooling max temps will
be 6 to 12 degrees above normal across the coasts and 12 to 18
degrees over normal for the rest of the area. The one exception
will be the Central Coast where local sea breezes will keep the
beaches several degrees blo normal. Gusty sundowner winds will
redevelop tonight when gusts up to 50 mph likely in areas such as
Gaviota and Refugio.
Max temps will plummet on Monday as hgts fall from 578 dam to 572
dam as a pos tilt trof moves into the nrn half of the state. More
importantly about 8 mb of onshore flow will develop in the
afternoon and will create a strong sea breeze with deep
penetration. The coasts will cool 4 to 8 locally 12 degrees while
the areas further inland will cool 12 to 20 degrees. Max temps
across the csts/vlys will only be in mid 60s to lower 70s. or 3 to
6 degrees blo normal.
The trof will continue to move through the state Monday night and
Tuesday. It will create a very deep 4000+ ft marine layer. Low
clouds will push over the csts, through the vlys and up into the
mtns. There will be slow clearing and likely no clearing at many
beaches. Drizzle or even light rain is possibility as well. The
trof is fairly sharp but it lacks moisture. Hi Rez mdls have
consistently shown very little chc of showers. The EC does show
some shower chcs over the eastern San Gabriels and a 20 percent
chc of showers has been added to that area. Most areas will cool
another 2 to 4 degrees with 5 to 10 degrees of cooling slated for
the LA/VTA mtns and the Antelope Vly.
.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...11/321 AM.
Not that much to talk about in the xtnd fcst. Dry slightly
cyclonic NW flow will move in behind Tuesday`s trof. Onshore flow
will increase each day and could exceed 9 mb to the east on
Saturday afternoon. Night through morning low clouds will occur on
all four days. There will likely be limited beach clearing
towards the end of the week. Max temps will rise both Wed and Thu
as the cool air assoc with the trof moves out of the area. Temps
will then cool Fri and Sat as the onshore flow increases. Max
temps will remain blo normal all four days. Low end advisory
gusts are likely across the western portion of the Antelope Vly
and foothills Fri and esp Sat.

.AVIATION...11/1756Z.
At 17Z at KLAX, the marine layer was around 600 ft deep. The top
of the inversion was at 1900 feet with a temperature of 25 deg C.
Hi confidence overall for the 18Z TAFs at KPRB, KSBP, KSBA, KWJF
and KPMD with VFR conds expected thru the fcst period. Gusty SW
winds will affect the desert airfields this afternoon thru Mon
morning.
Moderate confidence overall in the rest of the cst and vly 18Z
TAFs due to uncertainties in the timing and extend of low clouds
and IFR/MVFR conds later tonight and Mon morning, with the timing
possibly off +/- an hour or two, including changes in flight cats.
KLAX....Moderate confidence overall in the 18Z TAF. There is a
high probability of low clouds and MVFR conds affecting the
airfield late tonight into Mon morning, possibly extending into
early Mon afternoon. However, the timing of the onset of the low
clouds and improvement to VFR may be off +/- an hour or two. Any
easterly wind component will be less than 7 knots.
KBUR...Moderate confidence overall in the 18Z TAF. There is a
high probability of low clouds and MVFR conds affecting the
airfield about 14Z-17Z Mon morning. However, the timing of the
onset of the low clouds and clearing to VFR may be off +/- an
hour or two.
&&
.MARINE...11/828 AM.
Good confidence in at least Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level
winds across the outer waters south of Point Sal, and across the
inner waters each afternoon and evening through at least Tuesday.
For the waters north of Point Sal, SCA conds are likely through
Wednesday, however, conds may drop below advisory levels during
the late night and early morning period on Monday and Tuesday.
However, overall moderate confidence in the wind forecast through
Tuesday, as conditions will be near GALE FORCE levels across the
outer waters and around the Channel Islands. Exact expanse and
duration of these potential Gale Force gusts varies depending on
guidance, with the highest chances focused around the Channel
Islands each afternoon and evening and on Monday and Tuesday.
Decided to issue Gale Warnings for the outer waters south of Point
Sal for this afternoon into late night, but local Gale Force
gusts will be possible across the Santa Barbara Channel during
this time frame. Short- period, choppy seas will accompany the
winds through Wednesday as well.
There is a 50-60% chance the SCA winds will continue for all the
outer waters through Thursday. There is a 40% chance of SCA level
winds for western portions of the SBA channel Wednesday
afternoon/evening, then remaining below SCA levels on Thursday.
