Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Sacramento CA
158 PM PST Sun Jan 5 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
A few light High Sierra showers late Monday into early Tuesday,
otherwise dry conditions prevail with a gradual warming trend.
Gusty north to east winds develop late Monday and persist through
early Wednesday, strongest on Tuesday and in the mountains.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
Partly to mostly sunny skies are being observed across interior
northern California early on this Sunday afternoon, as seen on
GOES-West visible satellite imagery. Temperature observations
across the area are currently trending approximately 2 to 10
degrees warmer than this time 24 hours ago, with temperatures in
the mid 50s to low 60s in the Valley, and 40s to 50s in the
mountains and foothills, valid at 130 PM PST.
Dry conditions will prevail this week, outside of a few High
Sierra showers or snow showers late Monday through early Tuesday.
Little to no impacts are expected as precipitation is fairly light
and confined to the higher elevations of the Sierra Crest.
Otherwise, dry conditions expected elsewhere. Gradually warming
temperatures are also favored for the area this week, with high
temperatures in the 50s to 60s for the Valley.
An upper level trough will dig southward over the Great Basin
early this week, with upper level ridging over the Eastern
Pacific. A strong pressure gradient will allow for gusty north to
east winds to develop Monday night and persist through Wednesday
morning. The National Blend of Models (NBM) shows a 65-95%
probability of wind gusts of 30 mph or greater in the Valley west
of Interstate 5, and a 50-70% probability of wind gusts of 60 mph
or greater over the higher peaks of the Sierra Nevada. A Wind
Advisory has been issued for portions of the West Slope Northern
Sierra Nevada, Western Plumas/Lassen Park, and Northeast Foothills
including Highway 70/Jarbo Gap. These gusty winds can make
driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. People in
the mountains should use extra caution while driving, be alert
during outdoor activities, and secure any loose outdoor objects
such as holiday decorations.

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Thursday THROUGH Sunday)...
Cluster analysis and ensemble guidance generally indicate upper
level ridging over the Pacific Northwest with an upper level
trough over the Four Corners region to start the extended forecast
period. This pattern will result in periods of locally breezy
north to east winds. The National Blend of Models (NBM) currently
advertises a 35-65% probability (up to 90% over the Sierra Crest)
of wind gusts of 30 mph or greater mid to late next week, mainly
along and west of Interstate 5 in the Valley, the foothills, and
mountain areas. Dry weather will prevail over this timeframe as
well, with lower relative humidity, especially along the ridges,
and above normal temperatures for early to mid January
climatology. Ensembles then suggests the potential for another
trough to drop down into the Four Corners area, with high pressure
building back in behind it, that could allow for another round of
breezy to gusty offshore winds sometime next weekend.
&&
.AVIATION...
Mostly VFR conditions across the area until around 05z Monday,
when areas of BR/FG and low stratus develop leading to
MVFR/IFR/LIFR conditions. Best chances (20-60%) of visibilities
less than 1/2SM in the Sacramento Valley and northern San Joaquin
Valley from 05z Mon through around 18z. Surface winds generally
below 12 knots and from the north and east.
&&
.STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
Wind Advisory from 10 PM Monday to 7 AM PST Wednesday for
Northeast Foothills/Sacramento Valley-West Slope Northern Sierra
Nevada-Western Plumas County/Lassen Park.
