Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
500 PM PDT Sun May 11 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Warm temperatures are expected again today, with
increasingly gusty conditions this afternoon. Widespread strong
winds are expected Monday with gusts of 40-50 mph along with
pockets of blowing dust. Temperatures will cool sharply on Tuesday
with a slow rebound expected for the remainder of the week.
&&
.SHORT TERM...through Tuesday.
Infrared satellite and water vapor imagery show an upper-level
trough beginning to push into the Pacific Northwest. As a result, we
will see breezy southerly-to-southwesterly winds pick up across the
region today with stronger winds tomorrow. A Lake Wind Advisory is
in effect for Lake Mead and Lake Mohave due to breezy southerly
winds producing 2 to 3 foot waves on the lakes. These waves will
result in dangerous boating conditions for small craft today. A Wind
Advisory is in effect for the White Mountains of Inyo County with
40+ mph wind gusts expected through Monday. The Wind Advisory for
the Eastern Sierra and Owens Valley was upgraded to a High Wind
Warning due to the increasing threat of 55 to 70 mph downslope winds
in the foothills of the Sierra and across Highway 395 in the Owens
Valley. These downslope winds will pick up later this afternoon,
continuing into the evening hours for portions of the Owens Valley
north of Lone Pine, CA. Areas south of Lone Pine, CA will see the
downslope threat continue through early Monday morning, especially
around Olancha, CA. Outside of winds, temperatures will top out
right around where they did yesterday, producing Moderate HeatRisk
(Level 2 of 4) in the lower elevations and valleys of Inyo, Clark,
Nye, Mohave, and San Bernardino Counties with Major HeatRisk (Level
3 of 4) in the lowest elevations of Death Valley and the Colorado
River Valley.
Gusty southwesterly winds will pick up across the region tomorrow as
the aforementioned trough pushes into the region. With widespread
40+ mph wind gusts forecast, a Wind Advisory will go into effect for
much of our forecast area tomorrow morning, continuing through late
tomorrow evening when winds will begin to drop off. In addition to
widespread gusty winds, we will also see temperatures drop around 5
to 10 degrees from this afternoon to tomorrow afternoon.
Temperatures will drop another 15 to 20 degrees from Monday to
Tuesday as the trough axis swings through. Compared to Monday, winds
on Tuesday will be lighter in magnitude. However, a band of 25 to 35
mph wind gusts will extend across the Mojave Desert through southern
Nevada and into northwest Arizona. Isolated 40+ mph wind gusts will
be possible in areas of higher terrain on Tuesday, especially across
the Mojave Desert. The Eastern Sierra and the southern Great
Basin will see a 20 to 50% chance of measurable precipitation on
Tuesday afternoon as the trough axis swings through. Any
precipitation that falls will be relatively light with total
precipitation of 0.10 inches or less.
.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Saturday.
In the wake of the trough, a relatively unsettled pattern looks to
remain in place through the end of the week given continued
northwesterly to quasi-zonal flow aloft. Not only will this keep the
door open for additional troughs to move over the region, but it
will also temper the warming trend that`s progged to begin on
Wednesday. Temperatures will rebound to near and just above normal
by the end of the week, with ensembles and cluster analyses in
decent agreement that another short wave will move into the area
next weekend. While details remain uncertain, this trough would
produce another round of breezy to windy conditions as well as
another cooldown, so stay tuned.
&&
.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 00Z Forecast Package...Gusty
south-southwest winds will continue through this evening with gusts
to around 35 knots. After sunset, gusts gradually weaken to around
15-20 knots but will persist intermittently through the night. VFR
conditions prevail with FEW-SCT high clouds. Stronger winds will
resume tomorrow afternoon with gusts of 35 to 40 knots possible.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 00Z Forecast Package...Gusty south-southwest
winds will persist through at least sunset. Gusts expected to
generally be in the 25-35 knot range. This evening, winds at BIH may
become more westerly before weakening and turning north-northeast
overnight. In the Colorado River Valley, winds weaken after sunset
but hold on to their southerly component. VFR conditions prevail
with FEW-SCT mid-level and high clouds. Widespread strong southwest
winds with gusts of 30 to 40 knots are expected for Monday.
