.SYNOPSIS...Unsettled weather will continue through Friday with
gusty winds and much cooler temperatures. Calmer weather and warmer
temperatures are expected to return next week.

.UPDATE...The upper level low is currently centered over
southwestern Utah and will continue to progress southeast through
the rest of today and tomorrow. Northerly winds will increase
through the day as a pressure gradient tightens on the back end of
the low. The Wind Advisory for Inyo, Esmeralda, and central Nye
counties remains in effect through 11 PM tonight with expected peak
gusts between 40 and 50 mph. So far, most gusts have been in the 25
to 35 mph range. Although the environment is not as conducive for
thunderstorm activity compared to yesterday, scattered showers and
thunderstorms remain possible this afternoon, mainly in northwestern
Arizona.

.SHORT TERM...Through Sunday Night.

An upper level low is currently centered over northern Utah with a
trough axis extending southwest into southern California. A surface
cold front is currently pushing through northern Arizona and
southern Nevada with showers and a few thunderstorms just ahead of
the front. These showers/storms have been generally decreasing in
intensity as the front continues to push south, but will likely
remain into the early morning hours. We have also seen some very dry
air behind the front with dewpoints ahead of the front in the 30s
and 40s, but quickly dropping into the single digits to below 0 as
the front passes. Another thing of note is the significant
temperature drop behind the front with areas in Lincoln and Nye
counties seeing a 15-25 degree drop from 24 hours ago. Highs today
are expected to be about 10 degrees colder than Thursday.

The upper low will continue to push south through Utah today with
much of the energy focused in Utah and Arizona, but some wrap around
showers and isolated thunderstorms will work into eastern Lincoln
and northwest Arizona during the day. The other forecast challenge
is wind. Winds behind the front are expected to be highest across
Esmeralda,central Nye, and Inyo counties where wind advisories are
already in place. For those locations we could see wind gusts
between 35 and 45 mph, especially during the late morning and
afternoon. A wind advisory is currently in place for the western
portions of San Bernardino County, but it looks like the strongest
winds have already passed. Those areas could still see a few gusts
between 25 and 35 mph, but widespread gusts over 40 mph are not
likely. The wind advisory does expire at 5am and see no need to
extend it.

Weak ridging will occur over the weekend with drier conditions along
with a warming trend. Highs on Sunday are expected to be about 15
degrees warmer than today.

.LONG TERM...Monday through Thursday.

General cyclonic flow will dominate the weather pattern much of next
week, which will result in dry conditions. On southwest flow,
temperatures will warm back above normal on Monday to about 8-10
degrees above normal then will remain around this level through the
week. Weak impulses may zip through the mean flow at times, however
they will be weak and should not result in any significant weather
impacts. Breezy winds will be possible at times with the shortwaves
moving through, especially the second half of the week, but
probabilities for gusts over 40 MPH remain under 50% each day next
week.

.LONG TERM...Monday through Thursday.

week, which will result in dry conditions. On southwest flow,
temperatures will warm back above normal on Monday to about 8-10
degrees above normal then will remain around this level through the
week. Weak impulses may zip through the mean flow at times, however
they will be weak and should not result in any significant weather
impacts. Breezy winds will be possible at times with the shortwaves
moving through, especially the second half of the week, but

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 18Z Forecast
Package...Gusty northerly winds have picked up and will remain
through the day with a period of stronger gusts gusting 20-30KT between
about 20Z and 02Z before decreasing. Clouds will continue to
decrease throughout the day, with cloud bases around 15kft AGL
expected.The wind direction will vary between the northwest and
north, gusts diminishing after 05Z, and sustained speeds dropping
to around 10KT by Saturday morning. VFR conditions will prevail.


For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 18Z Forecast Package...Las Vegas Valley
terminals will follow similar trends to KLAS, with gusty winds
 up to 20-30KT throughout the day. KBIH will see continued
northwesterly to northerly winds with sustained speeds around
25KT this morning with gusts to 30-35KT expected through early
evening, when gusts begin diminishing. At KDAG, westerly to
northwesterly winds will remain gusty through 19/00Z, when winds
will briefly shift to the north before backing to the west and
dropping to around 10KT by the evening. In the Lower Colorado
River Valley, light and variable winds at KEED and KIFP will
become gusty out of the north to northwest around 20-21Z, with
gusts to 25-30KT expected. After sunset, winds decrease, but
remain elevated and at least intermittently gusty through the
night, with gusts to 15-20KT. While a few showers may develop in
the vicinity of KIFP and KEED this afternoon, confidence is too
low to include mention. Otherwise, VFR conditions prevail, with
ceilings gradually improving to 15-25kft through the period.
