AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
Issued by National Weather Service Medford OR
430 AM PDT Wed May 7 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Slightly cooler weather is expected today with
temperatures warming again Thursday and Friday. Partial clearing
is expected at the coast. The marine layer is expected to remain
remain in place at the coast. A late season rain and cooler
temperatures are expected Sunday into early next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...A weak shortwave approaching the area has brought a
return of the marine layer. This return of the marine layer will
keep temperatures in the coastal counties 5 to 10 degrees cooler
than yesterday. The marine clouds are expected to push back
towards the coast in the afternoon and there may be some breaks at
the coast, but the marine clouds are generally expected to
linger. Tonight this shortwaves moves past the area and may bring
some light drizzle to the coast.
Thursday through Saturday a fairly flat ridge remains over the
west coast with the ridge axis just east of the area. This is
generally expected allow the marine layer around to stick around,
although there may be some clearing in the afternoon.
Sunday a stronger upper level trough approaches the area. This is
expected to bring cooler temperatures and a wetting rain to at
least the northern portions of the area. The ensemble clusters are
showing some differences in how far south and how heavy the
rainfall will be. One of the clusters shows over an inch in Del
Norte county while another one keeps things mainly dry. So there
is still quite a bit of uncertainty. Currently the NBM is showing
a 25 to 70 percent chance of seeing at least a tenth of inch
of rain. The highest probabilities are in the north. Highs will be
much cooler than we have been seeing with temperatures only
reaching the upper 50s to low 60s. There is more uncertainty on
how quickly the rain will come to an end on Tuesday. MKK
&&
.AVIATION...Stratus has once again moved onto the North Coast last
evening and has more or less persisted into early this morning.
Mostly MVFR to IFR ceilings are affecting coastal terminals. Brief
periods of light offshore flow aided in scattering out low
stratus around KCEC and KACV; however, MVFR/IFR ceilings
redeveloped. Stratus is expected to stick around through most of
the day with a chance for lifting and scattering later in the
afternoon. Southerly flow up the Russian River Valley has brought
low ceilings around KUKI, this will scatter around sunrise.
&&
.MARINE...Gusty northerly winds have diminished in the northern and
inner waters. However, small craft conditions are still occurring in
the southern outer waters, mostly due to steep seas. This will
continue into this evening.
Ridging continues to fill over the Pac NW this week. This will allow
a thermal trough pattern at the surface keeping winds elevated, yet
below gale force, through the week. Wind waves will create a sea
state that can be hazardous for small crafts through this evening.
Large seas are expected to return late in the weekend to early next
work week.
&&
.EKA WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
CA...

NORTHWEST CALIFORNIA COASTAL WATERS...
