Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Sacramento CA
110 PM PST Thu Feb 6 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
Rain, snow and wind will continue into tongith with drying over
the weekend. Cold morning temperatures return this weekend and
into early next week. Another unsettled period of weather looks to
return mid to late next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Moisture continues to stream into central Caliofornia ahead of
upper low just off shore. This system will push into the area
this evening. Valley/foothill rain will begin to taper off late
tonight. NBM probabilities showing low propabilities (10-20%) of
1" of rain across most of the valley. So in comparison to last 2
systems this one will be less wet. As far as snowfall, heavy bands
of snow will continue above 5000 feet in the Sierra. However, snow
levels will push up this evening near pass level then fall back
down later tonight as precipitation decreases. NBM probabilties
solid above 6000 feet for at least a foot at 70-100%.
Probabilities of foot of snow at 5000 feet lesser around 10% so
current winter storm warning looks to be holding well.

Friday...EFI showing anomalous values of CAPE in the foothills and
mountains as at upper levels another wave pushes across norther
california. Overall moisture much less on Friday and also sounding
profiles not showing super supportive profiles which should result
in showers and possibly a stray thunderstorm, but in general much
less coverage of precipitation on Friday and ending winter storm
warning by noon looks good.

Saturday and Sunday...upper flow will turn more northwest as some
weak energy pushes south over NorCal. Not much moisture around so
a mainly dry weekend looks on track. Morning lows will be pretty
chilly with NBM showing probabilities of below 32 degrees pretty
widespread from 60-80% until Tuesday morning.
&&

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Monday THROUGH Thursday)...

Monday and Tuesday...good agreement in cluster forecast that we
will be a cooler somewhat drier sitatuion with northerly flow. But
some moisture in that flow for a lower chance (20 to 30%) of
showers by Tuesday. Wednesday into Thursday...upper flow turns a
bit more westerly with more moisture working into the area for
good chance of rain/snow by thtat time (70-90%). Snow levels look
to be fairly low with this pattern at this time down around 3000
feet so Sierra travel impacts looking very possible during this
time. Rasch
