National Weather Service San Diego CA

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak low pressure system moving through southern California
will bring a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms for this
afternoon for southwestern San Bernardino County. Night and
morning coastal low clouds will extend inland across mostly of the
valleys through Friday. A low pressure system from the northwest
will move into southern California this weekend, bringing gusty
winds, scattered showers and much cooler weather. There is a
slight chance of thunderstorms Sunday afternoon. Then dry and
warmer for next Wednesday through the end of next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
Low clouds cleared while cumulus formed and towered over the
mountains and high desert early this afternoon. A few of those
cells have formed into showers and a couple thunderstorms should
develop later this afternoon. A weak upper low has developed over
the central coast and will circulate just southwest of SoCal
today. The low weakens and slips eastward Friday, dissolving the
unstable pocket of air, but some moisture remains, enough for a
small chance of showers around the Big Bear area in the afternoon.
The much- advertised weekend storm will deepen as it comes down
the coast and cut off from the jet stream Saturday. The marine
layer will be deep early Saturday, and some showers could get
started mainly in the mountains late Saturday. There is good
energy for strong winds Saturday night through Sunday. Winds will
pick up Saturday afternoon and peak Saturday night and Sunday
morning, when gusts in parts of the mountains and deserts will
reach 45-65 mph. There is not a lot of deep moisture with this
system, but decent cold air for convective showers most likely
Saturday night through Sunday. There is also a slight chance of
thunderstorms Sunday afternoon. Snow levels will drop to
5,000-5,000 feet by Sunday morning, then rise later Sunday.
Precipitation totals through Monday will be less than 0.25 inch in
the coastal basin, near zero in northern Orange County and the
deserts, and up to about 0.67 inch in the mountains. That will
translate into 1 to 3 inches of snow accumulating above 6,000
feet. The upper low moves very slowly eastward, with lobes of
vorticity rotating around the low through Tuesday, so we won`t
have a clean end to precipitation, but it should decrease Sunday
night and Monday, just not completely ending until late Tuesday.
Dry and warmer weather will return as high pressure aloft rebuilds
Wednesday and Thursday.

.AVIATION...
012045Z....Coasts/Valleys...Low clouds are hanging over the
nearshore waters this afternoon and should be poised to surge back
into the coastal sites this evening with bases around 2000-3000 feet
MSL. Guidance suggests clouds will fill in from south to north with
coastal San Diego County becoming BKN arouns 0z-1z and valleys
filling in shortly thereafter. Low clouds may take a bit longer to
reach Orange County, but eventually the entire coastal basin should
be covered with bases hovering around 2000-3000 feet MSL overnight.
Similar clearing pattern expected Friday morning with low clouds
retreating to the beaches by 18z. Low clouds will linger over the
nearshore waters again Friday afternoon before surging inland yet
again during the evening.
Mountains/Deserts...Isolated thunderstorms are starting to appear
over the High Desert and San Bernardino County Mtns. Vis
restrictions and up/downdrafts will occur with any thunderstorms.
Thunderstorm activity will diminish by 04z Friday. Otherwise, SKC
with relatively light winds this evening through Friday morning.
&&
.MARINE...
No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Friday. Gusty
west to northwest winds will develop over the coastal waters this
weekend, with strongest winds Saturday night and Sunday morning near
35 kts at times. There is a 60 percent chance of Gale force wind
gusts during this time period for areas near San Clemente Island.
A Gale Watch is now in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday
morning. Rough and choppy seas will occur during this time; short
wave periods and combined seas of 7-10 feet in the outer coastal
waters and 6-8 feet in inner coastal waters are expected. Seas will
start to come down but remain elevated through the day Sunday.
&&
.BEACHES...
Elevated surf will return on Sunday as the above weather system
moves through the area. Forecast confidence remains low at this time
but surf of 5 to 8 feet are the latest thoughts. These waves will be
accompanied by strong rip currents.
&&
.SKYWARN...
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are
encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
&&
.SGX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
CA...None.
PZ...Gale Watch from Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning for
Waters from San Mateo Point to the Mexican Border Extending
