Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
959 PM PDT Sat May 10 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Warm temperatures will continue through the weekend,
with increasingly gusty conditions Sunday. Widespread strong
winds are expected Monday with gusts of 40-50 mph along with
pockets of blowing dust. Temperatures will cool sharply on Tuesday
with a slow rebound expected for the remainder of the week.

&&

.UPDATE...

After an unseasonably hot day today that saw many locations reach
highs 15 to 20 degrees above normal, the cooldown this evening
will be slow and gradual, with the warmer temperatures also
reflected in tonight`s lows. Temperatures overnight are on target
to bottom out in the 60s and 70s for most, with 50s in the higher
terrain. Early this evening, satellite imagery and observations
indicate high cloud beginning to stream over the region from the
west ahead of an approaching trough, with cumulus continuing to
bubble due to the presence of midlevel moisture. Most of the
showers associated with this activity have been across northern
Nye and Mineral counties, though a few sprinkles remain possible,
mainly across the northern reaches of Esmeralda County this
evening. Thus, the only update made was to mention light showers
in the aforementioned area, but otherwise, the forecast remains on
track.

.PREV DISCUSSION...455 PM PDT Sat May 10 2025...

.SHORT TERM... through Monday.

Mostly clear skies exist this afternoon across most of the region,
though there is some mid-level moisture focused near 500mb that
is resulting in some flat cumulus along terrain features. Enough
vertical depth may be present across the Sierra and northern Owens
Valley for a brief sprinkle or two along with some gusty winds
this afternoon, but otherwise not expecting much out of these
clouds. Meanwhile, south-southeasterly flow is gradually
strengthening with gusts of 20-30 mph noted across the Owens
Valley and Southern Great Basin. While these winds aren`t
especially impactful, they will only be ramping up further Sunday
and Monday.

The bigger story this afternoon remains the heat - the high so far
as of 2pm in Las Vegas is 97 degrees, but we have several more
hours to go to potentially eclipse 100 degrees for the first time
this year. While NBM probabilities are not especially optimistic,
we are running about 5 degrees warmer than this time yesterday,
and we reached 95 then, so it will be close. Death Valley is also
running several degrees warmer than yesterday, and is on track to
reach 110 by the days end.

Tomorrow, southwesterly flow aloft increases and a strengthening
cross- barrier flow develops across the Sierra and Owens Valley,
potentially resulting in strong downslope winds that could spread
into the US-395 corridor. This wind pattern will persist into
Monday when strong winds will expand to be area-wide. Went ahead
and issued a wind advisory for the Sierra, White Mountains, and
Owens Valley for Sunday through Monday. At least some spotty 40
mph+ gusts are probable tomorrow across eastern Inyo County and
the southern Great Basin as well, but NBM/HREF probabilities were
less bullish and held off for now. As the trough axis makes its
approach Monday, the pressure gradient will maximize and
widespread advisory level winds are expected across the region.
There is also a chance for some higher end wind gusts of 60 mph+
or greater near and downwind of the Spring Mountains including Red
Rock Canyon and the Desert Rock areas. Additional wind headlines
are anticipated in upcoming shifts.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through Sunday.

Cold front and trough axis will push through the region on
Tuesday, with sharply cooler temperatures and low end shower
chances in the Sierra and Southern Great Basin. High Temperatures
Tuesday afternoon will average 8-12 degrees cooler than normal,
with elevated post-frontal northwesterly winds across the
northern half of the forecast area, and more of a breezy westerly
wind across the southern and western Mojave Desert. Temperatures
will gradually moderate the remainder of the week, though there is
some uncertainty beyond the weekend as an additional trough may
develop and drop south, bringing renewed gusty winds and
temperatures trending cooler once again.

&&

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package...South to
southwest winds less than 10 knots will continue into tomorrow
morning before south-southwest winds gusting to 30 knots return by
tomorrow afternoon. There is a 1 in 3 (33 percent) chance of
seeing gusts to 35 knots between 20Z and 01Z, and a 10 percent
chance of seeing a gust to 40 knots. Winds will diminish somewhat
after sunset tomorrow, but gusts to 20 knots will likely persist
into Monday morning. Gusts over 35 knots are likely Monday
afternoon. VFR conditions will prevail through Sunday with only a
FEW to SCT clouds AOA 12kft AGL.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Conditions at the Las
Vegas area terminals will be similar to those described for Harry
Reid, except VGT will likely see winds more easterly for a few hours
tomorrow morning before turning southerly by midday. Elsewhere,
light winds tonight will give way to south to southwest winds by
late morning tomorrow. Most areas will see gusts of 20 to 30 knots
by afternoon. The exception will be in the Owens Valley, where
downslope winds along the Sierra could result in localized gusts to
40 knots. VFR conditions will prevail across the region through
tomorrow with only a FEW to SCT clouds AOA 12kft AGL, mainly across
southern Nevada and near the Sierra.
