Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
203 PM PST Sat Feb 22 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
* Periods of light showers and increased winds expected tonight
through Monday with gusty winds on Monday.
* Unseasonable warmth will continue through the weekend into next
week.
* A more unsettled weather pattern may emerge at the end of the
month into the first week of March.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
Can`t ask for much better weather to start the weekend as high
pressure aloft provides unseasonably warm temperatures amid
abundant sunshine. Daytime highs today will reach the 50s and 60s
across the Sierra and western Nevada, respectively, which is more
typical of mid-April than late February. Spring-like temperatures
will continue through much of next week with daytime highs in the
50s and 60s (some 70s in the Basin and Range).
A pair of upper shortwaves will sufficiently dampen the
aforementioned upper high to allow periods of light showers and
gusty winds tonight through Monday. There are two distinct waves
of showers with the first being tonight through Sunday afternoon
and the second occurring on Monday. Best shower chances will favor
an area from the Tahoe Basin into Lassen County and far NW Nevada,
although a few showers may be able to sneak farther southeast
into the Sierra Front and portions of the Basin and Range. Rain
accumulations will be light between both systems with perhaps a
dusting to 2" along highest Sierra peaks.
Of greater impact will be increased winds Sunday and especially
Monday, lending the potential of wind impacts to aviation and
recreation. Winds become breezy on Sunday with ridgetop winds
gusting to 50-70+ mph at times. Monday will be the windier day,
particularly across Lassen County, the Surprise Valley, and N
Washoe County where afternoon gusts reach upwards of 40-50 mph.
Elsewhere, wind gusts of 30-40 mph will be common across the
Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden area, while Mono County and
portions of Mineral County largely miss out on the stronger winds.
Expect bumpy flights, choppy lake water, and difficult driving
conditions for high-profile vehicles on Monday.
After Monday, winds become light as dry and warm weather prevails
through midweek. Shower chances may return late next week into the
weekend as ensembles continue to advertise a more unsettled
weather pattern as we head into March.

.AVIATION...
Widespread VFR conditions with light breezes will prevail today
with light showers and mountain obscuration tonight into Sunday.
Increasing FL100 winds will yield periods of mountain wave
turbulence and LLWS at KTRK/KTVL and Sierra Front terminals Sunday
and particularly Monday.
