.KEY MESSAGES...
1. Today is expected to be the warmest day for this upcoming
week, with a cooling trend expected to begin Sunday.
2. Triple digit heat currently has a 45 to 65 percent chance
(with Bakersfield at an 80 percent chance) of occuring today in
the southern San Joaquin Valley and the Kern County Desert.
Otherwise, expect widespread highs in the mid to upper 90`s in
the remainder of the Central Valley mainly north of Kern County,
and in the Sierra Foothills.
3. A disturbance is expected to impact Central California early
next week as unsettled weather will exist from Sunday into the
middle of the week. Sunday may also see slightly increased fire
risk as low relative humidities may concede with breezy winds in
the afternoon.

.DISCUSSION...
A ridge of high pressure remains dominate over desert southwest
today, causing a warming of temperatures in Central California.
These highs today are expected to be the warmest of the current
7 day forecasting period, with the Valley and Kern Desert seeing
a 45 to 65 percent chance of reaching triple digits (Bakersfield
is a bit of an outlier with the probability of 80% for 100
degrees today). These high temperatures today are a moderate
heat risk, meaning people who are most sensitive to heat are at
more risk of heat related illness. Along with these highs are
low relative humidities, with the Valley likely to see RH`s
just below 20 percent this afternoon. And while there is a
cooling trend expected to begin tomorrow with a disturbance
coming in, Sunday will also likely see these low RH`s. This
along with increased winds, present a slightly increase fire
risk, as low RH`s combined with breezy winds may make any fire
that does start more likely to spread, and may make it more
intense.
After Sunday, temperatures will continue to cool and afternoon
humidities will begin to recover, though winds will continue to
be stronger than usual. Especially along the Mojave Desert
Slopes and the Sierra Nevada crest, where probabilities for wind
gusts of 55 mph or higher in a 24 period are 70 to 90 percent.
Also with this disturbance is the slight chance for
thunderstorms along the Sierra Nevada crest on Tuesday, which
may have enough cold air aloft to produce lightning. These
storms may be drier than they would be if more moisture was
being pulled in from the ocean, but current probabilities for a
wetting rain (0.10 inches or more) in the Sierra Nevada is 10 to
25 percent Tuesday afternoon, which is when thunderstorms are
most likely to develop. This lack of rainfall may pose the risk
for dry lightning and may cause fires to start more easily.
After the disturbance moves out of the region, a more zonal flow
is expected to take over, which would lead to temperatures more
around normal for the time of year.
