AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
453 AM PDT Tue May 27 2025

.UPDATE...Updated Aviation Section.

&&

.SYNOPSIS...Warmer weather expected today for the interior.
Increasing chances for coastal stratus and fog this week. Hot
temperatures likely late week into the weekend.

KEY MESSAGES:

-Temperatures are forecast to warm to triple digits Friday and
Saturday

-Moderate to Major HeatRisk are forecast Friday and Saturday for the
interior

-75% to 95% chance for high temperatures to exceed 100 F Friday in
the warmer interior valleys

-40% to 75% probability for high temperatures to exceed 105 F in
the warmest interior valleys on Friday and Saturday

&&

.DISCUSSION...High pressure is building back in today, returning
a brief warming trend to the interior. Forecast high temperatures
in most interior valleys will range from high 80s to low 90s,
while the coastal areas are forecast to see low to mid 60s. Models
are in good agreement for stratus and fog to make a return
tonight and Wednesday, with clouds potentially lingering for much
of Wednesday. A weak trough moving into the Pacific Northwest
Wednesday and Thursday will weaken high pressure some and bring
some cloud cover to the interior. The main impact will be high
temperatures a few degrees lower than today`s. Increased moisture
aloft could support a few cumulus to pop up in Trinity County
Wednesday afternoon. The probability for thunder is low - 10% or
less. Elsewhere, probabilities are low for any rain as the weak
front passes through.

Models are in good agreement for a cutoff low moving into Southern
California late Wednesday into Thursday. As the trough moves out of
the Pacific Northwest Thursday into Friday, a Rex Block type of
pattern develops over the area. Offshore flow aloft will support
clear skies and hot temperatures in the interior. NBM is showing a
75-95% chance for triple digit temperatures in the warmest interior
valleys Friday and Saturday. Moderate to Major HeatRisk is forecast
for most interior valleys both Friday and Saturday. A the coast, NBM
is showing decent probabilities for low 70s Friday, though
confidence is low as winds look likely to remain westerly, albeit
light. The ridge begins to weaken Sunday as a trough moves through
the Pacific Northwest, cooling interior temperatures. By how much is
still uncertain, as how south the trough digs varies by model. JB

.AVIATION...(12Z TAF Update) Stratus has developed over Humboldt
Bay and the Eel River Valley. ACV is reporting MVFR ceilings early
this morning, which may briefly drop to IFR before sunrise. CEC
has remained clear early this morning, and stratus appears to be
struggling to spread northward from Humboldt Bay. Regardless,
stratus is likely to scatter later this morning. Afternoon winds
will be lighter than yesterday, with breezes limited to 5 to 10
kts. Stratus is likely to make a return this evening and tonight:
first forming around Humboldt Bay and ACV then advecting north to
CEC. UKI is forecast to remain VFR for the next 24 hours. JB

&&

.MARINE...Northerly winds peaked yesterday evening and have
started to diminish. These will linger around 10 to 20 through the
day today. A northwest swell of 5 to 6 feet at 11 seconds
continues to move through the waters as well.

Tonight and Wednesday these will diminish more. Tonight the
winds are expected to locally become southerly near the Humboldt and
Del Norte coasts. As the next weak front approaches the area winds
will start to turn southerly across the area through the day on
Wednesday. These will remain northerly to the south of Cape
Mendocino. This 5 to 7 foot wave at 11 seconds is generally expected
to continue through Thursday.

The front is expected to pass late Wednesday night. Thursday winds
are expected to increase to 15 to 25 kt by the late afternoon. Winds
will remain strong to near gale Friday and Saturday. Sunday strong
gales are possible, although confidence remains low on this at this
point. MKK

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...A new moon lunar cycle will bring
higher than usual tides over the next several days. High tides
are forecast to reach 8.12 feet tonight in Humboldt Bay. If the
current near 0.5 ft tidal anomaly persists, Coastal Flood Advisory
conditions may briefly be reached. There will also be large
negative tides down to -2.3 ft. The swings from these levels,
particularly from high to low, will create swift currents in
channeled areas.
