Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
135 PM PDT Sat Apr 19 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Dry and warmer today through early next week with high
temperatures near to around 5 degrees above normal inland by
Monday. Gradual cooling follows Tuesday through Saturday. Areas of
night and morning low clouds and fog continuing through next
week, becoming more widespread towards the middle of the week as
the marine layer deepens. Afternoon and evening winds will
strengthen slightly across the mountains and deserts for the
latter half of the week.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
.SHORT TERM...
Clear, sunny skies are present across the region today under weak
high pressure aloft. No surprises today, with afternoon high
temperatures near normal for coastal areas to a touch (up to about
5 degrees) below average inland and seasonal afternoon breezes,
including a good sea breeze for the coast and valleys. Some
patchy, shallow low clouds will develop near and along the coast
in the small hours of the morning Sunday, then clear later in the
morning.
Not much change from today into early next week, except for
variations in temperature. Sunday will be warmer than today, with high
temperatures near normal along the coast to about 5 degrees above
average inland. Monday will be similar to Sunday but a tad cooler
west of the mountains, as a weak trough moves through the weakly
cyclonic flow aloft, and a touch warmer for the mountains and
deserts. The slow cooling trend along the coast Monday and
Tuesday will spread inland starting Wednesday, as another weak
trough moves through the region. Afternoon and evening winds will
strengthen slightly in the mountains, passes, and deserts as well
due to the trough Wednesday, with peak gusts through the wind-
prone passes of 40-50 mph. Nightly and morning low clouds that
will start out shallow and confined to coastal regions will
gradually get deeper (cloud bases higher in the atmosphere) and
further inland mid to late week.
&&
.LONG TERM...
The cooling trend will continue for the region through at least
Saturday with continued broad low pressure aloft over the western
U.S. Temperatures will be below average likely by about 5 to 10
degrees Friday and Saturday. Another weak trough moves into the
region Friday which will likely bump winds in the mountains and
deserts up again for Friday and likely Saturday. Long-term
ensemble models are in good agreement through late Friday, after
which there are still large differences in the strength and
position of a likely stronger low pressure moving from the Pacific
Northwest into the western U.S. There is good confidence in below
average temperatures and breezy mountain and desert winds, but
the degree of cooling and strength of winds depend on where the
low pressure goes, as well as how deep the marine layer could get
with possible drizzle resulting. Both the GEFS and ECMWF ensemble
have backed off on what little precipitation chances they were
previously showing for Sun-Mon, and the weather will very likely
remain dry, besides chances for drizzle.

.AVIATION...
182030Z....Coasts/Valleys...Mostly clear skies expected through
tonight. Patchy low clouds may develop along the coast after 10Z
Sun. There is a 30 to 60 percent chance of BKN-OVC cigs developing
within 10 miles of the coast. Where low clouds develop, cigs will
likely be 700-1000 ft MSL. There is a 25 percent chance of fog with
visibility 1 mile or less developing along the coast. Any low clouds
or fog that develops along the coast should clear by 18Z Sun.
Mountains/Deserts...Clear skies with no visibility restrictions into
Sunday.
