Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
141 AM PST Wed Dec 4 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Generally benign weather continues as a Rex block remains over the
western states. This will maintain large scale upper ridging
across the Pacific Northwest with a trapped upper low over the
Desert Southwest. This pattern will maintain temperatures above
seasonal normals, dry conditions and generally light winds
outside of the Colorado River Valley.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Through Friday...
Large scale upper ridging persists this morning across the
northern tier of the western CONUS. This ridge will reinforce and
essentially block the meandering upper low that has affected the
region over the last couple of days. The result will be a
maintenance of above normal temperatures and dry conditions. While
winds will generally remain light, the only area of concern will
continue to be bouts of breezy/gusty winds across the Lower
Colorado River Valley, which could enhance wave activity across
Lake Mohave. At present, HREF and NBM guidance suggests a 40-70%
chance of gusts over 30 mph, which is more than enough to enhance
wave activity. These winds may be enhanced further on Friday as
the upper low strengthens across southern Arizona, an optimal
positioning for north/northeast winds across the wind-prone
Colorado River Valley. Currently, conditions look to fall beneath
any headline criteria, but will continue to evaluate. Regardless,
choppy conditions can be expected on area lakes Friday into the
weekend.

.LONG TERM...This Weekend through Tuesday...
A high-pressure ridge across the southern Great Basin will
continue to dominate the weather across the area on Saturday,
keeping winds light and temperatures several degrees above normal.
However, the ridge will begin to break down by Sunday as a trough
of low pressure drops down into northern Nevada. The latest GFS
and ECMWF ensemble runs both take this system slightly further
east than what was seen in earlier runs, resulting in a decreased
wind threat for our area. The latest NBM guidance shows most areas
will see wind gusts in the 20 to 30 mph range Monday and Tuesday,
with only the lower Colorado River Valley seeing a meaningful
chance (40% to 50%) of winds over 40 mph. As is typical with these
"Inside Slider" systems, moisture will be limited and the latest
NBM does not include significant POPs for the entire region
through early next week. If any were to occur, it would likely be
in the higher elevations of Lincoln County. As this system passes,
temperatures will cool off, with most areas seeing readings fall
to near or slightly below normal levels by Monday. Less windy but
seasonably cooler conditions will continue into Tuesday.

&&

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Light winds following typical daily
trends are expected through Thursday evening. This means light
southwest winds overnight and light northeast winds in the
afternoon. SCT high clouds will clear by morning with just a FEW
high clouds expected into Thursday.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Light winds will prevail for all TAF sites outside of
the Colorado River Valley through this evening. Meanwhile,
northerly winds of over 10 knots with gusts of 15 to 25 knots are
expected along the Colorado River Valley again this afternoon,
which includes KEED and KIFP. SCT-BKN high clouds will gradually
clear this morning with just a few high clouds remaining through
the afternoon.

&&

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
procedures.
