Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
218 AM PST Wed Dec 4 2024

.SYNOPSIS...

* Strong valley inversions continue at least into the start of the
weekend with areas of freezing fog redeveloping each night.

* Expect near seasonable temperatures outside of valley areas
impacted by fog and low clouds.

* No significant storms are on the horizon through mid-month, but a
slider system could help erode the inversions by late weekend.

.DISCUSSION...

Forecast details look to more or less stay the same for the
remainder of the week. When looking at the 04/00Z KREV sounding
along with the ensemble forecast soundings going through the rest
of this week, temperature inversions continue across the region
that will strengthen during the overnight hours and going into the
following mornings. With this setup, light winds will persist
across the region for the rest of the week as high pressure in the
area allows the stagnant conditions to linger. As for the
temperature forecast, area daytime highs for the rest of the week
look to be near to a few degrees above normal being in the 40s and
50s. Cooler overnight lows in teens and 20s are seen the valleys
while mid-slope and ridgeline areas may stay around the freezing
mark. The overnight redevelopment of freezing fog is expected in
the same valley areas that have seen these conditions over the
past few days such as those areas from the Honey Lake basin into
Pyramid Lake as well as adjacent desert basins. Fog may also impact
portions of I-80 across Western NV, especially near Fernley.
Another Freezing Fog Advisory continues through this morning in
these areas. For more detailed information, please see the
Advisory product. Those traveling through the affected areas
should use caution as visibilities may be reduced and roads may be
slick. Air stagnation will also continue this week as ventilation
and mixing remains poor to marginal with the inversions in the
area.

The first chance of a potential break in this foggy pattern full of
inversions looks to possibly be late Saturday going into Sunday as a
majority of ensemble cluster scenarios still show a potential
"slider" system moving through the region. This system does not
expect to bring much in the sense of precipitation as only areas
closest to the OR border see a slight chance (10-15%) of light
showers on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. But a cold front may move
through with this system allowing for some northwest winds on
Sunday that could help erode the inversions seen this week. A
cooling trend looks to be on tap going into the beginning of next
week along with dry conditions. Forecast guidance shows some
potential for the dry streak to break on Wednesday though there is
some uncertainty between the long term models on the timing for
this, so will monitor this situation in upcoming runs. -078

.AVIATION...

Strong valley inversions expect to persist at least into the weekend
with areas of haze and minor reductions to slantwise visibility in
the forecast for area terminals during the afternoon hours. Areas of
freezing fog and low stratus are expected to continue across the
Honey Lake Basin, Pyramid Lake area, stretching north through the
Black Rock/Smoke Creek Deserts, and south to Fernley during the
overnight hours and going into the following mornings for the next
few days. For this morning, freezing fog potential reducing
visibilities looks to continue for KSVE and KTRK through 04/17Z
with a 30% chance of KRNO and KRTS seeing some visibility
reduction due to fog as well. -078
