.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

A trough of low pressure currently over the Great Basin this morning
will continue to dig south as it moves east today. The main impact
from this low so far for Southern California has been areas of gusty
winds in the mountains and deserts, and some light rain/drizzle
along and west of the mountains this morning. As of 8 AM peak wind
gusts today have been in the 45 to 55 mph range with a few gusts
closer to 60 to 65 mph in wind prone locations. Any precipitation
this morning has been light with accumulations under a tenth of an
inch for the coast and valleys and up to 0.15 inches on the coastal
mountain slopes. High resolution model guidance is indicating that
any additional shower activity after this morning will be limited
to the mountains. Guidance has indicated that winds peaked
overnight, with another weaker uptick in winds tonight. Winds will
diminish in to Wednesday morning.

The main trough axis will be to our east by Wednesday but the region
will maintain an overall troughing pattern with a ridge of high
pressure building over the Eastern Pacific. The overall troughing
pattern will keep high temperatures just below the seasonal normal
through Friday and maintain at least night and morning low cloud
coverage. The consistent onshore pressure gradient will maintain
elevated afternoon sea breezes on the desert mountain slopes and
deserts.

For the weekend, there is better agreement that troughing
will continue to prevail over the Western United States. There does
remain some disagreement on the position of the trough, which will
have impacts on our temperature, wind, cloud, and precipitation
forecast. For Sunday there is more agreement in a deeper trough, but
there is uncertainty in how far west or east the trough will be
which will have larger impacts on if any precipitation will be
associated with this system. Regardless of the depth of the trough,
increased winds and cloud coverage this weekend are likely. By
Monday, there is good ensemble agreement that the trough will be
off to our east with upper level ridging beginning to inch closer
to the West Coast. By Tuesday, the majority of ensemble clusters
show ridging over the West Coast.
