Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco CA
209 PM PDT Sat Jun 7 2025
...New SYNOPSIS, SHORT TERM, LONG TERM...
.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 1205 PM PDT Sat Jun 7 2025
Quiet pattern remains through the extended period with
temperatures right around seasonal averages nearly across the
board. Slight cooling trend by the end of next week.
&&
.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Sunday)
Issued at 1205 PM PDT Sat Jun 7 2025
Very subdued pattern ongoing currently with seasonal temps and
good onshore flow. Current RAP analysis showing a broad upper
level ridge building over the PNW while a weak closed low remains
separated from the jet stream flow and meandering nearly
stationary off the CA coast. The marine layer is a bit shallower
than 24 hours ago but really not having much sensible impact under
the ridge thanks to the reinforced onshore flow from the closed
low. Inland locations will heat up a few degrees Sunday, but
really not too much impactful change, especially for areas closer
to the coast.
&&
.LONG TERM...
(Sunday night through next Friday)
Issued at 1205 PM PDT Sat Jun 7 2025
This pattern largely continues into next week before the ridge
starts to break down and a deeper trough pattern starts to dig
into the West Coast. Once again not much notable change noted with
this subtle pattern change. Temperatures gradually cool a few
degrees through the middle of the week ending up a few degrees
below seasonal normals. The good news is that robust onshore flow
looks to persist through the forecast period which will at least
help to stunt the drying of fire fuels at least through the next
week. Fuels across much of the region remain around or above
seasonal average moisture. Worth keeping in mind that this
includes large fuels as well, so it`s worth noting that fine fuels
such as grasses are indeed very dry and susceptible to easy fire
starts.

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1050 AM PDT Sat Jun 7 2025
The marine layer persists at around 1,000 feet this morning with a
mix of IFR/MVRF ceilings anticipated to retreat to the coast by late
morning or early afternoon. A similar pattern will prevail with an
increase in onshore flow this afternoon, easing a bit overnight.
High confidence for low ceilings (IFR/MVFR) return late this evening
around the Monterey Bay terminals and then by early Sunday morning
for the Bay Area terminals, similar to this morning. However, there
is low confidence for LIFR fog and ceilings across much of the
region overnight and into Sunday morning.
Vicinity of SFO...IFR/MVFR ceilings linger across the region late
this morning with mostly clear sky conditions expected this
afternoon. Onshore winds are expected to increase this afternoon to
between 15-20kt and begin to ease late this evening and into early
Sunday morning. High confidence for IFR/MVFR ceilings to return
early Sunday morning (similar to this morning). However, confidence
for LIFR ceilings and/or fog is low during this timeframe. Low
ceilings and/or fog that do develop will dissipate once again by
late morning or early afternoon on Sunday.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...IFR/MVFR ceilings linger across the region
this morning but are anticpated to dissipate or scatter out by 18Z-
20Z. Onshore flow will return by this afternoon with low clouds
retreating to the coast. There is high confidence for IFR/MVFR
ceilings to return late this evening and into early Sunday morning.
However, there is low confidence for LIFR ceilings and/or fog to
develop. Low ceilings will lift toward the end of the TAF period.
&&
.MARINE...
(Today through Thursday)
Issued at 1050 AM PDT Sat Jun 7 2025
Buoys are reporting gentle winds across the coastal waters this
morning with moderate sea heights. A westerly breeze will pick-up
this afternoon, enhanced by diurnal effects along the coast and in
the Bays. A low amplitude, long period southwesterly swell
arrives Monday and will causing waves to break in deeper water.
Significant wave heights will remain moderate until a strong NW
breeze and rough seas arrive mid-week.
&&
.MTR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
