Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
1108 AM PDT Sat May 10 2025
updated aviation discussion
.SYNOPSIS...10/902 AM.
High pressure aloft will keep the weekend hot away from the coast.
Gusty sundowner winds are expected Sunday evening across
southwest Santa Barbara County. Onshore flow will strengthen next
week and bring much cooler conditions with low clouds and fog
pushing back into the valleys. There is a chance of drizzle next
Tuesday.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-MON)...10/1052 AM.
High pressure and hot temperatures continue to dominate the
weather this weekend, especially away from the immediate coast,
with many sites approaching or even breaking daily high
temperature records. It will be hot in many areas again Sunday as
well, but likely not at hot as the last two days as the high
pressure ridge is shifting east as a cold upper low is dropping
south along the West Coast. Temperatures Sunday will likely race
to a fast start, but rapidly increasing onshore flow in most
areas will bring cooler air inland which should cut off the
warming earlier in the day. The one exception to this will be
southwest Santa Barbara County where increasing northwest flow
ahead of the upper low will generate gusty Sundowner winds up to
50 mph. Gusty southwest winds are also expected across the
Antelope Valley as well.
Substantial cooling on tap for Monday as the low pressure system
enters the northern half of the state. Hgts will fall to 574 dam
by the afternoon. The onshore flow to the east will increase to
any impressive 8 mb. The marine layer clouds will come roaring
back and will cover most of the csts/vlys save for the SBA south
coast which will have some northerly offshore flow. The csts will
cool 5 to 10 degrees and the rest of the area will see 10 to 20
degrees of cooling. This will bring max temps down to 4-8 degrees
below normal for most areas and as much as 10-15 degrees below
normal across much of SLO County. Afternoon winds may approach
advisory levels across the Antelope Valley.
Heights will continue to fall into Tuesday as the upper low moves
southeast through northern and central California and into
northern Nevada. While most of the moisture with this system will
remain north of the area, the rapidly cooling temperatures aloft
and a deepening marine layer may squeeze out some drizzle or light
showers Tuesday morning, especially in upslope areas like the
eastern San Gabriels and adjacent foothills. Temperatures in most
lower elevation areas will top out in the 60s with minimal
clearing of clouds.
.LONG TERM (TUE-FRI)...10/330 AM.
A fairly dry trof will move over the area on Tuesday. There will
be strong onshore flow and a deep marine layer. Marine layer
clouds will overspread the csts/vlys and xtnd onto the coastal
slopes and deep into the mtn canyons. It does not look like the
system is wet enough to generate showers on its own. When the trof
interacts with the deep marine layer it could well produce areas
of drizzle or even light rain. Clearing will be slow and likely
non existent for many beaches. Look for another 3 to 6 degrees of
cooling with 6 to 12 degrees common across the LA/VTA mtns and the
Antelope Vly. Max temps across the csts and vlys will mostly be in
the 60s with only a smattering of 70 or 71 degree readings.
Advisory level wind gusts are also likely across the Antelope Vly
in the afternoon.
Dry NW flow moves into the state in the wake of the trof. Hgts do
not rise that much. There are offshore trends so, while there will
still be night through morning low clouds and fog across the csts
and many of the vlys, there will be faster and better clearing.
That system moves east Wednesday but weak troughing will continue
the remainder of the week keeping temperatures below normal with a
steady dose of night and morning low clouds and fog. Max temps
rebound nicely on Wednesday with smaller gains both Thu and Fri.
By Friday max temps will mostly be in the 60s across the csts and
70s in the vlys which is still 3 to 6 degrees blo normal.

.AVIATION...10/1804Z.
AT 17z at LAX, the marine inversion was 400 ft deep. The top of
the inversion was at 2300 feet with a temperature of 28 deg C.
High confidence in the current forecast for valley and desert
terminals and most coastal terminals with VFR conds thru the
forecast period.
Moderate confidence in the current forecast for KSMX, KSMO, KLGB
and KLAX. VFR conditions are expected at these airfields into
later tonight, then aft about 07Z-10Z there is a 30% chance of
LIFR/VLIFR conds developing at KSMX, KSMO and KLAX, and a 60%
chance of VLIFR conds at KLGB with improving conds by mid to late
morning.
KLAX...There is a 30% chance of VLIFR/LIFR conds between about
10Z-15Z Sun. Otherwise, VFR conds are expected through the fcst
period. Any easterly wind component will be less than 7 knots.
KBUR...VFR conditions are expected through the period.

.MARINE...10/834 AM.
For the waters southwest through northwest of the Channel Islands
and the nearshore waters along the Central Coast, there is a 40-50
percent chance of Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level winds this
morning increasing to a 60-80 percent chance by this afternoon.
The highest chance will be beyond 30 NM offshore of the Central
Coast south and east to Point Conception and west of the Channel
Islands. By Sunday afternoon, there is a 80-100 percent chance of
widespread SCA conditions developing and continuing through at
least Monday night, and likely into Tuesday night. There is a
40-60 percent chance of GALES between Sunday and Tuesday, highest
on Monday and Tuesday. SCA level winds are likely to persist into
Wednesday and Thursday.
Inside the southern California bight, winds and seas will likely
remain below SCA levels through Sunday morning. Then, there is a
40-80 percent chance of SCA level winds on Sunday afternoon and
evening, increasing to a 50-90 percent chance on Monday afternoon
and evening, and again on Tuesday afternoon and evening. There is
a 30-50 percent chance of GALES on Sunday afternoon and evening,
increasing to a 40-60 percent chance on Monday afternoon and
evening, and again on Tuesday afternoon and evening. The highest
chance will be for the western portions of the waters inside the
bight and in the vicinity of the islands. Winds and seas will drop
below SCA levels after Wednesday.
A shallow marine layer depth over the coastal waters, low clouds
and dense fog will be common across the southern coastal waters
this morning, and again tonight through Sunday morning.
