Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
215 AM PDT Fri Jul 11 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

* A multi-day heat wave peaks this weekend with highs 100-105
degrees for western Nevada and upper 80s to low 90s in the
Sierra, with little overnight relief in urban areas.

* Haze and smoke from northern California and southern Oregon
fires may reduce visibility and air quality through the weekend.

* Isolated cumulus buildups may spark showers or lightning along
the Eastern Sierra crest and Lassen zone through midweek, with
increasing gust potential by next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Temperatures will climb sharply today as dry southwesterly flow and
strong ridging expand overhead. Afternoon highs will reach the upper
90s for much of western Nevada, with peak heat expected Saturday
through Monday. Western Nevada valleys will top out between 100-105
degrees, while Sierra locations such as South Lake Tahoe, Truckee,
and Mammoth Lakes will see highs in the upper 80s to low 90s.
Overnight lows in the Reno-Carson corridor will remain elevated in
the upper 60s to low 70s with little to no relief expected in
urban centers. HeatRisk values are forecast to reach major levels
Sunday and Monday. For reference, Renos forecast high of 102
degrees Sunday is just one degree shy of the daily record of 103
set in 2014.

Typical afternoon zephyr breezes will develop each day with gusts 20-
25 mph. Winds increase more notably early next week, with Tuesday
and Wednesday featuring elevated chances (50-80%) for gusts greater
than 30 mph along the Sierra Front and western Nevada. Some haze and
smoke may linger today across northeast California and northwest
Nevada due to wildfire activity in northern California and Oregon.
This will likely persist into the weekend, especially during the
morning hours before dispersing with daily mixing.

While the region remains under dry southwest flow, subtle
instability will develop each afternoon along the Eastern Sierra
crest and Lassen convergence zone. While the probability of any
thunderstorm development remains very low (5-10%), isolated buildups
and high-based showers can`t be ruled out in these areas through
early next week.

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions will prevail, but morning haze/smoke may reduce
slantwise visibility, with some afternoon improvement.

Daily zephyr breezes (gusts 20-25 kts) return each afternoon through
early next week, increasing to 25+ kt gust potential by Tuesday-
Friday.

High density altitude will persist due to the prolonged heat,
particularly during the afternoon at Sierra terminals and western
Nevada airports. Expect reduced aircraft performance during peak
heat in the afternoon, particularly for high-elevation takeoffs
and landings.
