Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco CA
846 PM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

...New UPDATE, MARINE...

.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 246 PM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

Remarkably stable weather pattern this week with temperatures
generally near the seasonal average, marine layer clouds each night
and morning, and breezy onshore winds each afternoon and evening.

&&

.UPDATE...
Issued at 844 PM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

No update to the forecast this evening. With no major pattern
change expected through the extended forecast, we`ll mostly be
dealing with the ebb and flow of the marine layer each day and
night and the associated potential of patchy fog and drizzle
during the overnight hours into the early morning each day.
Temperatures do warm slightly for the end of the weekend into the
beginning of next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Tuesday)
Issued at 246 PM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

The picture from space this afternoon is mesmerizing as stratus
flows over our waters and hugs the coast. You can also see some
stratus lingering in select interior areas such as Marin County,
around San Francisco and Oakland, and hugging interior northern
Monterey County. There may be some additional give in these areas or
along the immediate coast, but that will be short lived. Stratus is
expected to surge back inland tonight, similar to what we saw last
night. This means we could also see pockets of drizzle where the
marine later is thickest tomorrow morning. Otherwise the forecast is
more or less on repeat with temperatures being near normal to
slightly below normal.

&&

.LONG TERM...
(Tuesday night through next Sunday)
Issued at 246 PM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

Upper level ridging gets flattened on Wednesday as an upper level
shortwave trough quickly passes over southern OR and northern CA.
This will leave us with quasi-zonal flow through mid to late week,
with an upper level trough moving in for the weekend. The forecast
is generally going to be on repeat with cloudy nights and mornings,
breezy onshore flow during the afternoon and evenings, and near
seasonal temperatures.

&&

.AVIATION...
(00Z TAFS)
Issued at 628 PM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

Onshore winds supported by a currently strong 4.8 mb SFO-SAC
pressure gradient will continue to usher stratus /MVFR-IFR/ inland
tonight and Tuesday morning. Patchy light coastal drizzle is
possible as well. Stratus mixing out back to near the immediate
coastline Tuesday afternoon then stratus moves inland Tuesday
night and early Wednesday.

Vicinity of SFO...Stratus /MVFR-IFR/ tonight and Tuesday morning.
Stratus mixing out to scattered clouds /VFR/ Tuesday afternoon
then stratus /MVFR/ moving inland Tuesday evening and night. West
wind periodically gusting to 25 knots through mid evening, though
because of a currently strong 4.8 mb SFO-SAC pressure there may a
few higher gusts this evening. Otherwise winds generally easing
tonight and Tuesday morning. West wind gusting to 25 knots Tuesday
afternoon and evening.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...Stratus /MVFR-IFR/ tonight and Tuesday
morning. Patchy light drizzle tonight and Tuesday morning. Stratus
lifting to MVFR-VFR by late Tuesday morning or early afternoon.
Mainly onshore winds 5 to 15 knots, with a few higher gusts to 20
knots during the afternoon.

&&

.MARINE...
(Tonight through next Sunday)
Issued at 844 PM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

Fresh northwest breezes persist across the waters through mid
week, becoming strong for the second half of the week. A low,
amplitude, long period southwesterly swell persists through
Tuesday morning, bringing enhanced currents. Near gale force winds
possible over the outer waters by the end of the week.

&&

.BEACHES...
Issued at 617 PM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

A long period southerly swell will enter the waters today into
Tuesday bringing a higher risk for rip current along beaches.
Breaking waves about 5 to 7 feet, but strong currents and sneaker
waves will be the bigger hazard. Use caution near the water and
never turn your back on the ocean.
