Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Birmingham AL
218 AM CDT Tue Apr 8 2025
...New LONG TERM...
.KEY MESSAGES...
Updated at 217 AM CDT TUE APR 8 2025
- Freeze conditions are expected for the northern half of Central
Alabama Wednesday morning, while all other locations will at
least observe patchy or areas of frost as temperatures drop into
the upper 20s in the far north to mid 30s in the south.
&&
.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Wednesday)
Issued at 100 AM CDT TUE APR 8 2025
Cold conditions filtering into the region with the abundant
moisture from the abundantly soaked ground, is resulting in some
patchy fog. Will be keeping an eye on the development through the
morning to see if a dense fog advisory would be needed. Otherwise
high pressure sets up shop for the short term and keeps our area
on the cool side through Wednesday. The coldest morning will be
Wednesday morning with readings in the upper 20s in the far north
to mid 30s in the south. Will likely be upgrading the freeze watch
to a warning and issuing a frost advisory for the rest of the
area. Went a few degrees below guidance based on previous biases
with shallow cold airmass and radiational cooling. With that said
though the ground moisture will also be a concern and could keep
temperatures from dropping as much. At this time feel confident
enough to go ahead with the cooler temperatures based on impacts
this time of the year.

.LONG TERM...
(Wednesday night through next Monday)
Issued at 217 AM CDT TUE APR 8 2025
A weak cold front is expected to push southward through TN and into
Central AL on Thursday. This will lead to increased rain chances (40-
50%) across much of Central AL. The highest chances (60-70%) will
likely be in the eastern portions of Central AL along the Georgia
state line. With the cooler/drier air mass in place ahead of this
weak front, instability looks to be minimal, so I`ll only carry a
low (20-30%) chance for thunderstorms Thursday afternoon into the
early evening hours. The boundary should be well south of the area
by Friday morning, ending any rain chances for Central AL.
A longwave upper trough remains in place across the Eastern CONUS
Friday through Saturday. This will lead to northerly flow and a
cooler air mass across Central AL over the weekend. The trough
shifts eastward as ridging builds in Sunday through Monday, which
will lead to a gradual warming trend as we go into the first part of
next week.

.AVIATION...
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 100 AM CDT TUE APR 8 2025
Overall VFR conditions expected through he next 24 to 36 hours.
However, with the current ground moisture and cooler temperatures,
airports near bodies of water will likely see passing areas of
fog through the night. Currently seeing restricted conditions at
ANB and EET. Have added in some fog into the typically impacted
areas and will monitor for any additional locations.

.FIRE WEATHER...
MinRH values will drop back into the low 30s for this afternoon
and then the mid 20s to low 30s on Wednesday. We will see some
rebound on Thursday as the next system approaches from the north.
20 ft winds will remain on the breezy side, around 10 mph with
some gusts up to 20 mph this afternoon, with lighter winds on
Wednesday. Elsewhere, look for Mixing Heights to rebound as well.
The next chance at a wetting rain will be Thursday night into
Friday.
